When I was eleven, I asked to learn to play either the violin or percussion instruments. The only instrument which I was offered by my school's band director was a clarinet. This didn't work out so well for a dyspraxic girl with chronic sinusitus. I quickly abandoned my musical training and forgot all about it until I purchased a violin as a gift to myself once I moved away from home at eighteen.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find anybody willing to teach violin to a complete beginner adult so I tried, unsuccessfully for years to learn it on my own.
Finally, I accepted that my violin was gathering more dust than playtime so I sold it to a friend who put me in touch with a place where I could rent my dream instrument, a hammered dulcimer!
I've been happily tapping away at my dulcimer for years now. I'm still a total amateur but I'm getting there. In the meantime, my daughter is expressing an interest in musical instruments herself so I'm practicing my music theory to arrange various scores for our small collection of percussion instruments.
