The piece tries to musically depict the experience of a traveler who witnesses a pagan ritual. The strange ceremony takes place around a bonfire at a cold and distant mountain settlement. Masked people burst into a frenzy of dance and ecstatic priests pray to their gods. As the ritual progresses, the traveler’s mind becomes misty. Soon he transcends reality and enters a strange world-a world of dreams, a world of fantasy. There he discovers hidden spiritual treasures that will change his life forever. Finally, his spirit gets pulled back into his body while the natives continue their dance and end the ritual. The piece combines heterophonic dance elements (representing the secular part of the ritual) with strict contrapuntal writing, including a double canon (representing transcendence to the spiritual world).Cover Design - Dimitris I. UPTOWN GIRL - THREE or FOUR GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This very playable but satisfying arrangement suits 3 guitars, 4 guitars or (even better!) a large ensemble.This is a piece that's full of hidden gems...For an audience it's absolutely full of uplifting key changes - not just one on the last chorus! This arrangement starts in A, but visits the keys of F, C, D and E more than once, and each one seems to lift the mood yet higher. And then there's a gentle fade away to a quiet finish.For an adult trio, it's an easy rhythmic crowd-pleaser that any audience will like. Each line has its own contribution to the overall big wall of toe-tapping sound.For a guitar teacher, it's a great exercise in rhythm and a chance to show students the half-diminished chord (the m7b5) and the poignancy of the flattened ninth. And indeed to remind them that there's more to good music than just three chords!For a school teacher, this trio comes with a potential life-saver - there's a second version of the Guitar 2 part that is split into two separate parts - 2a and 2b. These parts are ideal for a mixed ability ensemble where one or two players are new starters with guitar (yes, the Guitar 2b part really is that easy!) So play as a trio or a quartet - the choice is yours, and rest assured that an ensemble of widely differing abilities will be able to tackle it to great effect.I hope you enjoy this piece as much as my adult Guitar Workshop ensemble does!

No clarinet duet has made me stop in rehearsal and just smile so much from how cool things sounded. - Marcus Moore, clarinetist on Duo MpingoDuo Mpingo is an approximately 6 minute crowd pleaser that is perfect for any occasion. It is a modern but accessible piece that is loosely based on the lifecycle of a mpingo, or African blackwood, tree. It is a relatively advanced piece but could be performed by advanced level students. Duo Mpingo can be programmed equally well on environmental-themed or any other type of concert.Program Note: When I began to research the mpingo (African blackwood) tree in preparation for writing this piece, I came to learn that it is a fascinating tree. It has the ability to survive fires, it does not reach maturity for about 70 – 100 years, and it improves soil fertility. However, it is endangered in several African countries due to illegal logging and over-harvesting, in part because of its beautiful dark heartwood. The outside of the mpingo tree looks like any other tree with a light brown color; the inside, however, is a gorgeous, dark brown-black color – a color you have seen if you’ve ever seen a clarinet, as clarinets, along with other western instruments, are made out of the dark heartwood of the mpingo tree. I had never stopped to think about why wooden clarinets have such a dark color instead of what one typically thinks of as a wood color. I was astonished by the hidden beauty of this tree and what secrets lay inside.Duo Mpingo is somewhat programmatic in that it loosely chronicles the imagined life of a mpingo tree. There is a short section close to the middle of the piece (the inner part of the piece, if you will) that is meant to evoke the beautiful, mysterious, endangered dark heartwood of the mpingo tree. The direction to the performers for this section is solemn, prayer-like, reverential, which is how I feel we should look at every tree – not as something in our way that needs to be cut down, but with reverence for the amazing living things they are.Duo Mpingo was commissioned and premiered by Daraja Music Initiative and Clarinets for Conservation to promote a sustainable planet. Momentum takes us on a journey to explore the hidden potential of the fixed metallic bars of the vibraphone in a live electroacoustic performance. Composed for the extraordinarily talented multi-percussionist Rosie Clark, currently studying performance at the University of Nottingham, and in demand across the country with a variety of ensembles and collaborating with Rosie to bring this composition to life has been an exciting and educational experience.The inspiration for Momentum came while watching a video of the Frankfurt based percussionist, composer, and lecturer, Max Gaertner. In the footage, Gaertner demonstrated the art of pitch bending a note on a vibraphone, and in that moment the idea for this composition was born.In Momentum, we delve into the intriguing concept that seemingly static metallic bars possess the ability to move and transform within this musical context. This can occur either through the physical manipulation of the performer, or by the technical wizardry of the technician. These bars which are often viewed as fixed entities thus reveal their hidden dynamism, allowing for a world of musical possibilities.Enhancing this idea of motion, Momentum incorporates a further extended technique of bowing causing the bars to resonate with an ethereal vibrancy. Pairing this effect with spectral effects through plugins by Michael Norris in Ableton Live amplify the kinetic energy of the composition. The performer also moves a handheld microphone over the bars, capturing their sounds in real-time motion.Paul Emmett - May 2023.

The title mystery derives from the dialogue between two opposing forces, the first, presented in the opening theme, is a beautiful locked box containing hidden gems of knowledge, while the second, heard in the development section, is an aggressive passionate voice seeking the answers to the sacred question: what is the meaning of life? These two voices go back and forth in a type of struggle before finally, at the end, there is a kind of opening or revelation, where the box is partially opened, perhaps to reveal another box inside containing a deeper layer of meaning. Extinction Events (2nd movement - It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players, although the 2nd movement is easier. This is the second movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Cuckoos are quiet reminders of spring when they first appear at the Marsden, United Kingdom area where they have a Cuckoo fair every year. Their habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate as their numbers slowly decrease. In the music, the cuckoos in the 3rd clarinet part get progressively sad sounding and simply disappear. In the span of a night before our next rehearsal (inspired by inadvertent procrastination and an explosion of ideas, not to mention an overabundance of coffee), I came up with this fanfare. The name comes from the Rush song Freewill, in which I quoted a line from Geddy Lee's melodic bass playing. It is hidden in plain sight. If you know the song, see if you can find it! The form of the song is a metaphor for life, the greatest test of free will. An ostinato that carries throughout the piece starts with only the first trombones. Eventually, you meet other people and influences that begin shape who you are, which is why the remaining trombones add more musical ideas as the piece continues. The middle section fluctuates between time signatures and tone colors (confusion, emotions) and the ensemble and conductor choose how the tempo ebbs and flows. It is never played the same way twice. Eventually, everything comes together at the end, which is why the ensemble ends, with the original ostinato, together.
