La Nigérienne (French pronunciation: [la ni.ʒe.ʁjɛn]; The Nigerien) is the former national anthem of Niger. The lyrics are by Maurice Albert Thiriet; Robert Jacquet and Nicolas Abel François Frionnet wrote the music. It was adopted as Niger's anthem in 1961 and relinquished in 2023.The anthem was written by French film composer Maurice Albert Thiriet. The music was composed by two other Frenchmen, Robert Jacquet and Nicolas Abel François Frionnet. It was adopted in 1961, a year after Niger gained independence from France.On 21 November 2019, President Mahamadou Issoufou announced that he had decided to change the national anthem. The decision followed criticism that some of the lyrics appeared to express gratitude to the former coloniser, France, with Nigeriens on social media challenging lines three and four. A committee chaired by Prime Minister Brigi Rafini was charged with reflecting on the current anthem by providing corrections and if possible find a new anthem that responds to the current context of Niger. Created in 2018, it was composed of several members of the Government and about fifteen experts experienced in writing and musical composition. Assamana Malam Issa, the Minister of Cultural Renaissance, said a hymn must be found that can galvanize the population, be for us a kind of war cry to touch our patriotic fiber.On 22 June 2023 the National Assembly adopted The Honor of the Fatherland as Niger's new anthem.The Honor of the Fatherland (French L'Honneur de la Patrie) is the national anthem of Niger. It was adopted on June 23, 2023, replacing La Nigerienne, which was adopted in 1961, a year after the country's gaining of independence.Niger, a former colony of France, became an independent country in 1960. The following year, the country adopted La Nigerienne as its national anthem. In 2019, President Mahamadou Issoufou announced his plans to replace La Nigerienne, following concerns that the lyrics expressed perceived gratitude towards the colonial power. The Water Is Wide and Wade in the Water suggest a uniting of a folk song and a spiritual. The Water Is Wide is a folk song of Scottish origin and Wade in the Water is a spiritual that contains explicit instructions to fugitive slaves on how to avoid capture and which routes to take to successfully make their way to freedom. Escaping in water was a strategy to throw pursuing bloodhounds off one's trail. They were encouraged to follow these directions: Wade in the water, Wade in the water children, Wade in the water, God's gonna trouble the water. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection).About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. Dorm 40 Music #6352917. Published by Dorm 40 Music (A0.740291). The Star-Spangled Banner was not officially recognized as the National Anthem of the United States until an act of Congress in 1931. Prior to that, the US War Department designated the song as the National Anthem in 1917, at least for the military. But, in 1917, the was no standardized version of the Star-Spangled Banner for military bands to perform. Two separate committees were formed to create standardized versions of the Star-Spangled Banner, one sanctioned for the military, and the other for non-military use. This unique arrangement contains four historic versions of the Star-Spangled Banner: 1917 Service Version, 1918 Standardized Version, John Philip Sousa’s arrangement from 1889, and the Department of Defense Edition from 1955. All four versions are similar, yet surprisingly different in the harmonic and rhythmic treatment of the melody. In addition, the arrangement includes each part in both concert B-Flat and A-flat (A-flat being the preferred key used for singing). Play them all, or just pick the one you like the best. These are all questions which Wir bauen eine Stadt answers in a playful and child-oriented mode. COMMENTARY Since 1926, Hindemith had been pursuing the objective of attracting children and amateur musicians to contemporary music through the composition of especially suitable musical works. In 1927, his musical-educational ambitions led among other projects to the involvement of the youth music movement in his plans for the Baden- Baden chamber music festival in which he was deeply involved in his capacity as member of the programme committee. Neue Musik Berlin 1930, a supplementary event following the Baden-Baden music festival, was to be devoted not only to radio plays, amateur choirs and electric music, but also to the field of ‘plays and songs for children’. The play for children Wir bauen eine Stadt was created in collaboration with the Berlin author Robert Seitz who provided the text and was premièred on 21 June 1930 by children aged between eight and twelve years old providing the final work in the concert Neue Musik Berlin 1930. The work swiftly achieved widespread dissemination and was available in a number of different languages within two years of its completion. Hindemith explained his pedagogical concept behind Wir bauen eine Stadt in a preface to the score as follows: ‘A play for children: this means that this work was more intended as a lesson and exercise for children themselves rather than for the entertainment of adult audiences. The form of the work can be altered according to the appropriate needs of the group of children involved: songs can be omitted and other musical pieces, dances or scenes inserted. An infinite number of children can participate in this work; apart from the minimum of three players for the “orchestraâ€, no specific instrumentation is specified. If numerous musicians are available (perhaps also those with instruments which are played in other registers than the pitches indicated in this work), these can be employed doubling at the octave of the two outer parts to achieve a more interesting texture. The music can additionally be livened up by tambourines, drums and other easily playable percussion. […]’ Alongside three instrumental movements, Hindemith’s play for children primarily consists of choral songs in verse form for one- and two-voice choir with a few simple individual solo parts. This classic children’s theatre composition has up to the present day retained its prominent place within the (school) theatre repertoire. Six pieces from this work were issued in a piano version for children in 1931 under the title: Wir bauen eine Stadt. Klavierstücke für Kinder. (S. Sch.-G.)
