Handy was one of the most influential songwriters in the United States.Handy was an educated musician who used elements of folk music in his compositions. He was scrupulous in documenting the sources of his works, which frequently combined stylistic influences from various performers.W.C. Handy wrote numerous compositions including St Louis Blues, Memphis Blues, Yellow Dog Blues, along with this march Hail to the Spirit of Freedom written in 1915. This march was written for the Lincoln Jubilee commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation held in Chicago. There are quotes Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, Columbia, Gem of the Ocean, Hail Columbia, My Old Kentucky Home, Old Black Joe, Hot Time in the Old Town, Dixie. Yankee Doodle, and the bugle call Reveille.

The language is period specific to that time, yet the music is universal.Rehearsal recommendation:The verse text is notated in consistent eighth-notes. The Road to Freedom is a collection of settings of four spirituals meant to describe the longing of the African-American slaves on American plantations for freedom. Many of these were based on biblical themes, the better to fool the slave-owners. The first song, Let My People Go, was used to let slaves know that Harriet Tubman, known as Moses, was in the area and ready to lead them from slavery to freedom. The second, Deep River,  refers to the River Jordan and to crossing into campground, the promised Biblical land, but that was code for the Ohio River and passing into the north and freedom.  Wade in the Water reminded slaves running away that by wading in the water they could hide their scent from the dogs pursuing them.  Oh, Wasn't That a Wide River - and then one more and maybe another to cross on the way to freedom. These lovely arrangements catch the spirit of the experience.

Recognized as one of Oscar Peterson’s most significant compositions, Hymn to Freedom was written in 1962 and was swiftly embraced by people over the world as the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. The piece was Peterson’s first major work and was written with encouragement from his producer and dear friend Norman Granz. During those initial recording sessions, Granz urged Peterson to create a tune with a “definitive early-blues feelâ€. For inspiration, Peterson drew upon various church renderings of Negro spirituals recalled from his childhood in Montreal. He aimed to maintain the unadorned, yet poignant quality of these early Baptist hymns while composing the beginning chorus of Hymn to Freedom. Upon its completion, Peterson and Granz decided that lyrics would complement the music and contacted Malcolm Dodds, composer, arranger and choir director of The Malcolm Dodds Singers, a backup group for many popular artists of the day. Dodds turned to his collaborator Harriette Hamilton, who had been writing lyrics for the choir group’s original compositions for several years. According to Hamilton, “all the lyrics had to do was express in very simple language the hope for unity, peace, and dignity for mankind. It was easy to write.†With Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, the trio recorded the piece on Night Train (Verve 1962), which became one of their most commercially successful albums. Critical acclaim moved Peterson to record Hymn to Freedom on several albums that followed. This arrangement is playable by SATB Saxophone Quartet with optional Bass Saxophone, String Bass and Drums. For performances by SATB Saxophone Quartet without rhythm, the part marked Baritone Saxophone 2 (substitute Bass Saxophone) should be used. Some improvising is allowed for in the soprano, alto and tenor parts. Optional written solos are provided. It's all temendous fun, and the beauty of the driving rock/gospel treatment is the audience gets to participate in the rockin' call and response of the chorus. Nothing like that to bring an audience to its feet!This arrangement features a tenor solo and TTBB voices singing an active background, so the entire choir participates in furthering Mission Man's narrative of wild times on Saturday night. The style is an educated doo-wop with influences classical choral arranging. While not perfectly suited to average church social, the song's redeeming qualities are the straight up blues and gospel influences of the early 1970s while the content is safely PG-13.The difficulty level is Intermediate with a desire to tear the house down.
