Nu Tal (Mi Tierra) or My Land, is one of my first orchestral works, commissioned by Dr. Irving Ramirez, associate conductor of the El Salvador’s Symphony Orchestra.At the beginning, the idea was to set four small sketches of different images from my country. The 3rd movement was composed first, at that point I didn’t have a name for the work but after a talk with my mother in law, Aracely Sánchez; who is an expert in Salvadoran folklore, I decided to change the work’s name to Nu Tal (My Land in Nahuatl) and use some elements from our folklore. Then, I combined the idea I had from the images and the folk rhythms and tunes to create the whole work.The first movement of the work contains actually two movements. The first part is an image of a plane going to El Salvador. While the plane comes out of the clouds a beautiful land is seen through the window until the plane lands safely at its destination. Immediately, the folk part of the movement (movement II) begins with the invocation performed by the shell to the four cardinal points and then an autochthonous sound is presented welcoming our guests to this magical land, and the theme develops until the end of the movement.The third part was the first composed and it is an image including various ideas that represents a vision of El Salvador from different perspectives and the complexity of the different generations that are currently creating El Salvador’s demographic landscape.The fourth movement is an amalgamate of folkloric ideas and images. The beginning is the call from a church by the bells, then the brass presents the main theme of the movement, which is based on the Gregorian chant Salve Regina that I deconstructed using different rhythmic meters. En su sección inicial la obra presenta un patrón rÃtmico no convencional (métrica de 5/8) que de vez en cuando se intercala con métricas más tradicionales. La sección media es introducida por las cuerdas que de forma misteriosa nos introduce a una atmósfera de mayor contemplación. para luego regresar a la parte rÃtmica y recapitular el tema melódico inicial. El compositor escribe: En mis años como Pianista y director asistente del Coro Nacional de El Salvador disfruté mucho montar obras como la que usted disfrutará esta noche. Lo cierto es que el compositor ha querido buscar una obra que sea accesible y que tenga a la vez un carácter único, como las grandes maravillas de nuestro planeta y la naturaleza. The work was kindly commissioned by Dr. Luis VÃquez, conductor of the University of Rhode Island’s Symphony Orchestra and to whom this work is being dedicated alongside with his wife Melissa. The titles of the movements come from either an specific dream, or other topics about dreaming that I discovered in the process of writing the work. I. Cherry trees in the morningNature has always inspired me. Every year during spring my family has the tradition to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to experience the cherry blossoms. I usually do not remember many of my dreams but in this particular dream I was in Japan under an esplanade of cherry trees. I remember how amazed I feel and is for sure one of my most memorable dreams. II. DreamcatcherWhile I was writing the initial ideas of for the work I came across a Journal that explored how the use of a particular chord helped reduce nightmares in patients suffering from nightmare disorders. In the study, patients were exposed to the chord C69 (A C Major with the added 6th and 9th) during therapeutic sessions. This chord is used at the beginning of the movement as it moves to explore different sonorities. In this movement you might be able to hear a representation of the “heartbeat†played by the bass drum and timpani, then a more “stressful†section will come to represent a nightmare followed again by another repetition of the C69 chord. If you feel relaxed during the performance, it is on purpose! III. A Dance in the desertDreams, in my case, are usually a mix of different non-related things. For the final movement, I decided to use that idea. I started this dance with a “oriental†style and them throughout the middle of the movement I moved it to a waltz that was influenced by my grandfather. He used to have a small orchestra and he used to play waltzes during events and private parties.I hope the music takes you through a journey of musical emotions.Juan Guerra González

The final section of the piece is a picturesque dialogue between the clarinet and the piano representing the night is over and dawn is coming. Nocturno is kindly dedicated to Laura Jiménez Tassara as a way to say thank you for her dedication and hard work in favor of many musicians. Versos was written as a graduation gift to my dear friend Gabriela Fernández, who premiered the piece in Argentina while doing her graduation recital in Choral and Orchestral Conducting in 2023. I had the great privilege of using a poem by Salvadoran poet Andrea Montano, who is also living in Argentina. In the poem, Andrea explores the idea of the quest of every artist for creativity and ideas that sparks the imagination. As a composer, the words resonated in my mind, and I immediately had ideas for the music.The music reflects the journey of every artist through the waters of inspiration using a series of textures created by the voices that are gradually evolving and contracting. The piece is very challenging and demanding for the performers and the conductor. The main musical lines will flourish in between the textures created by the other voices. ___The work might be described as impressionistic in its character. The piece might be very demanding for the singers, but they will for sure enjoy performing it.

Published by Juan Carlos Guerra Gonzalez (A0.933341). Echoes II is a part of a set of five choral pieces I wrote in 2002 as part of my composition training with Dr. Joseph Karl Doetsch. The central idea of the piece was to use effects mainly used in audio production settings to be represented with vocal music. As you might find in the score, the work has no text, this is because I wrote it to be centered in the sound. Conductor might choose a vowel of preference to perform each section. The idea of the echo effect is created by repeating the note using different dynamics. The melody will be presented throughout the piece moving into different voices. You will notice sections in which the effect is toggled between on and off. Just like a real audio production machine.Unfortunately, the other 4 parts of the series were lost and this is the only one I found.

The first movement “Bajo la lluvia†(Under the Rain) represents the juvenile experience of doing different activities under the rain like playing, running, and dancing. I have memorable memories of my childhood under the intense rain. The experience of being in the rain can be funny or stressful depending on your perspective. The music pretends to be ambiguous, presenting the theme in different tonal centers and moving between different intensities until fading in the rain.“Rocio†(Dew) is the second movement of the piece. The slow music pretends to evoke a relaxing morning in the countryside enjoying the view of the dew on the green plains. The delicacy of the piano in combination with the warmth of the strings will help to create a relaxing experience for the listener. This movement is like an oasis to the noise of our daily lives.The third movement “Tempestad†(Tempest) is based on a Salvadoran Traditional Rhythm called “Xuc†As an interesting fact, while I was composing this movement I learned that Costa Rica had a traditional rhythm that is very similar called “Tambito.†The movement is full of energy, portraying a Thunderstorm. This movement is very demanding for the performers, especially for the soloist. Every single morning when my wife wakes up, our cat Zeus comes to her and starts his massage routine (yes, we have a cat that does massages.) When he’s in the middle of his routine he always purrs, as many cats do. One day he changed the time of his routine and instead of doing in in the morning, he came to our bed when we were almost sleeping. When he started purring, I was impressed by the sense of relaxation I was getting from that sound and I decided to use it in my next composition.I came across an investigation of Dr. Karen Mccomb, a professor at the University of Sussex, London who also appeared on the documentary The Lion in your Living Room (available at Netflix) According to Dr. Mccomb, cats have two different types of purrs, the first type is for when our feline friends want something from us (solicitation purr) and the other one when they’re just relaxing (non-solicitation purr). I divided the piece into two movements, accompanied by a prerecorded tape. Multiple cats joined this movement with their particular meows. The second movement (Non-solicitation Purr) is more relaxing and lyric for the soloist.
