Many years ago I was on a judging panel to select winning song entries to mark the United Nations World Peace Celebration. I remember being quite disappointed in the majority of entries because the lyrics proceeded to list all the current world conflicts and their proposed solutions. It made for overly long, and ultimately boring, songs. I was haunted by those entries when I went home that night. I lied in bed and thought all I wanted to hear was.... Finally, at a sleepless 2 a.m., I got up and went to the piano and wrote this piece as a response to that. (That line from my tortured dream; all I ever wanted even made it into the song.). I set it for TTBB voices to provide a closer, tighter harmony to indicate the brotherhood I was dreaming of. Its simplicity and extreme brevity are no doubt knee jerk reactions to the long, boring pieces I heard all day. This piece has been in my drawer for two decades because I thought it was too brief to be of any practical value for anyone, but all attempts I made to lengthen it seemed to spoil it. But it remains one of my favorite and most passionate pieces that I have written, so I have decided to post it 'as is' and let you creative types decide how to use it. Enjoy!. (recording is a simple piano reduction of the voice parts to show harmonies and progressions)

We may not see her riches, we may not see her queen, her temple a pure heart, where choirs sweetly sing. And soul by soul and silently, her shining bounds increase, her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha
Program Notes
The Impossible Dream (The Quest) is the most popular song from the1965 Broadway musical Man of LaMancha and is also featured in the 1972 film of the same name. The song was composed by Mitch Leigh,with lyrics written by Joe Darion. It was awarded the Contemporary Classics Award from the Songwriter?sHall of Fame.
I have always found the lyrics of TheImpossible Dream extremely moving:
Todream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.
To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star.
This is my quest,
To follow that star

Each verse is progressively based upon an overall narrative: 1. hopes of the parent for the child 2. an easy, natural rhythm to family life, possibly the child is older now, and there is a dream of family continuance 3. uncertainty over who is nurturing who: does the child now sing to comfort the parent? 4. a closing blessing for peace and rest that hearkens back to the successful sleep of a tired infantIII. I Would Rock My Child to Sleep- A sentimental Irish lullaby Irish lullaby Do Chuirfinnse Féin Mo Leanbh a Chodladh (I Would Put My Own Child to Sleep) highlights the shifting roles of a caregiver: the parent full of hopes of the parent for the child morphing over a lifetime into a blessing from the grown child to the aged parent. Each verse is progressively based upon an overall narrative: 1. hopes of the parent for the child 2. an easy, natural rhythm to family life, possibly the child is older now, and there is a dream of family continuance 3. uncertainty over who is nurturing who: does the child now sing to comfort the parent? 4. a closing blessing for peace and rest that hearkens back to the successful sleep of a tired infant III. My husband and I had known Richard and Karen from our time as fellow graduate students at the Yale School of Music; Richard had studied composition and Karen piano, both very talented musicians and lovely people, so I was touched to be asked and very happy to write Peace on Earth as a gift for their daughter Katie, who was graduating from Oberlin Conservatory. Katie patiently waited out the coronavirus pandemic and on April 16, 2023 she and pianist Nomin Samdan premiered Peace on Earth on her masters degree recital at the Bard College Conservatory, where she was wrapping up her studies in the Vocal Arts Program. She wrote about Peace on Earth in her recital program notes that, “Hall responds to Williams’ catalog of constellations through slowly shifting harmonies and smooth, swung rhythms. The composer imagines the night sky as though one is dreaming it, ‘...whether it’s really up there above us or just taking place within the sleeping person’s soul.’ Through this luscious song, we are invited to daydream collectively and to come into a more unified consciousness.â€.

This was inspired by the story of a homeless man my grandmother met in her neighbourhood when she was young. Everyone thought he was insane but my grandmother did not think so since he always carried poetry writings and artworks with him wherever he went. My grandmother befriended him and during one of their conversations on the street he told her that he spent his life writing poems, drew portraits of the women he loved, and acknowledges that “life is nothing but a dream”. One day this homeless man disappeared and it wasn’t until a few weeks later that he was rumoured to have passed away one rainy night inside an abandoned house which was his childhood home. This piece intends to describe that man’s thoughts and feelings during his final moments: his lifetime memories, his final acceptance, and true inner peace before saying goodbye to this world.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125787). This is another lullaby in my favorite meter of 7/4. The melody floats along as though on a peaceful river of eighth-notes supplied by the left hand. In the first verse, the melody is played in octaves with the occasional addition of an alto voice at the ends of phrases, which seems to comment upon the music..to reinforce what was just said. In the second verse, there is the addition of harmony in the right hand in either sixths or thirds. Soon the texture grows thicker as the chords become three-part and finally arriving at five-part chords as the piece reaches its climax. There is a dream-like quality to this arrangement which is never disturbed throughout. The music feels like a gentle balm for the weary soul… a soul which is accosted by trials every day, but that can take solace in the promise of the babe born this night.
