In 2021, the song became an internet meme - TikTok users collaborated with the app's duet function to record virtual group performances of the song, which soon starting to go viral.

The song frequently refers to the "wellermen", supply ships owned by the British Weller brothers who emigrated to New Zealand. The song was probably written in New Zealand around 1860?1870. The lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea and its hunt for a right whale.
