Collected Songs Vol. 1-3 - by Rued Langgaard for Voice and Piano. Critical edition by Ole Ugilt Jensen and Bendt Viinholt Nielsen / The Rued Langgaard Edition. Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) is one of the most important Danish composers of the 20th century. He has however only acquired this status many years after his death. Langgaard was an eminent musical talent but with his romantic and symbolist view of art he ended up as an outsider in an era when the trend-setting musical life of the time was permeated by Carl Nielsen's sober and modern attitude.Rued Langgaard's production within the lied genre comprises 125 songs. Half of themwere composed in the short span of years between 1914 and 1918 when the composer was in his early twenties. With this publication in three volumes Langgaard's important and personal contribution to the genre is presented in its entire range. Only 27 of the songs have previously been published. The songs are set to German Danish and Norwegian poems. The poems in Danish and Norwegian are included in an English translation (though not designed for perform- ance purposes). Each volume is accompanied by an introduction source descriptions and a critical apparatus in Danish and English. The Rued Langgaard Edition (RLU) was established in 2000 the aim being to present practical performance-oriented publications of Langgaard's works on a critical scholarly basis. Vol. 1-3 are also available separately: WH32785 WH32786 WH32787.

Vol. 1-3-Collected preludes and minor pieces for organ volume 1-3. Edited by Bi...(+)
Vol. 1-3-Collected preludes and minor pieces for organ volume 1-3. Edited by Birgitte Ebert and Bendt Viinholt Nielsen. The Rued Langgaard Edition Edition Wilhelm Hansen Copenhagen 2017. With the publication of Rued Langgaard’s preludes and minor pieces for organ in three volumes the contribution made by the composer to this repertoire is being presented in its entirety and all its diversity. The publishers have decided to include as many ofLanggaard’s small pieces for organ as it has been possible to present in an authentic form rather than to carry out a selection based on aesthetic or formalcriteria. The 112 compositions are presented in chronological order in accordance with Bendt ViinholtNielsen’s catalogue of works Rued Langgaard’s Compositions (1991). The intention to include as far as possible all the completed compositions in the edition has resulted inconsiderable editorial challenges. In certain cases Langgaard’s own handwritten manuscripts are so unclear or incomplete that the editors have had to abandon the possibility of arriving at a form of publication that lives up to the strict requirements made by the Rued Langgaard Edition regarding authenticity and a critical approach to the source material. Therefore the editors have made no attempt to include a number of mainly untitled and undated preludes which Langgaard left behind in so loose a notation that publication in anything approaching authentic form is not possible (these pieces are registered in the catalogue of works in the appendix of omitted works as U10-U20). CONTENTS Volume 1 PRELUDES AND MINOR PIECES FOR ORGAN 1912-1939 [1] Jeg vil din Pris udsjunge (Præludium) / I Will Sing Thy Praise (Prelude) BVN 52:1

Fanfarer-Danmarks Radio for Orchestra BVN 351 was composed by Rued Langgaard in 1948. Instrumentation: 3.2.2.2/4.3.3.1/timp/2 perc/org/str. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk This extremely short orchestral piece was composed 7 May1948 in Ribe. Exactly between 5:45 and 6:45 in the morning(“normal time”). Rued Langgaard indicates the time of dayin both the sketch for the composition and the fair copy of thescore. Fair-copying of the score took place on 10 May 4:30 to6:00 in the morning (“summertime”) after it should be noted Langgaard had taken his obligatory morning constitutional inRibe (he suffered from insomnia and arose in the early morninghours). After the work’s final measure Langgaard wrote:“Short razor-sharp line of thought in music excluding allextraneous ‘developmental’ fussiness and with lightning fastmovement in all the parts”. The same day 10 May he sent thescore as program suggestion to the State Broadcasting Servicein Copenhagen under the title Denmark’s Radio Fandfare forGrand Orchestra – “fandfare” as a sarcastically meant spellingmistake with an allusion to “the Devil” (fanden = the Devil inDanish). Langgaard had as is known an ambivalent relationshipwith the State Broadcasting Service. The work was not acceptedand the score was therefore returned to Langgaard whonevertheless submitted it again. The State Broadcasting Serviceclearly regarded the piece as a joke from the composer’s side. When Langgaard died in 1952 the unperformed score was tobe found in broadcasting corporation’s music

Version 2-From the preface: Symphony No. 5 constitutes a special 'family of works' within Rued Langgaard's output. The starting-point was the orchestral piece Summer Legend Drama which was written in1917-18 and premiered at the Nordic Music Festival in Copenhagen on 16 June 1919 with Frederik Schnedler-Petersen as conductor. After a revision in 1941 this work was entitledA Thing of the Past (BVN 140). In 1920 Langgaard wrote his Symphonic Festival Play (BVN 166) which he based on Summer Legend Drama but which incorpo rates a new middle section and a new conclusion and at the same time is considerablyshorter. The composer conducted the Symphonic Festival Play himself at the Danish Concert Society on 20 April 1921. The following year the work was performed in Berlin by the Blüthner Orchestra and in Vienna by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra on both occasions under the direction of the German conductor Hans Seeber-van der Floe. Langgaard's next step was to abbreviate and revise the Summer Legend Drama in 1926; he presented it at a concert on 11 April 1927 in Copenhagen under the designation Symphony no. 5 (one movement). This is the version that the composer later named 'version 1' and which the Rued Langgaard Edition published in 2002.
