John Luther Adams' Among Red Mountains for solo Piano. 'I've always been intimidated by the Piano. As a performer I never played it very well. And as a composer I've never felt as if Icould make the instrument my won.On a recent trip to New York I heard the premiere performance of a lovely chamber work by Kyle Gann that embraces multiple tempos without sustaining them all at the same time.On the way home to Alaska I passed through Seattle. In the Seattle airport there's a large painting by Frank Stella It's one of his protractor works in which arcs of bright colours weave in and out of one another in a dizzyingcounterpoint of imaginary planes. Studying this painting (after hearing Gann's music) it occurred to me that I might be able to do something similar with the Piano. Virtually all my recent music has been composedof four five or six simultaneous tempo layers. If those ensemble and orchestral pieces are multi-dimensional sculptures then Among Red Mountains is more like a drawing. In this piece the challenge I set for myself was tosuggest five independent tempo planes within the limitations of two hands and what Vicki Ray calls 'the Big Black Box'. For three decades I've admired the Piano music of Peter Garland. At last I have a piece thatI hope is worthy of this dedication. The title Among Red Mountains is the translation of the Gwitch'in Athabascan name for a place in the Brooks Range north of Arctic Village.' - John LutherAdams

John Luther Adams' Five Yu'pik Dances for solo Harp. Composed in 1991. Duration: 7-8 minutes. 'This set of miniatures is based on traditional dance songs of the Yupik Eskimo people ofWestern Alaska. In their original forms these melodies would be sung in unsion. The first third and fifth songs would be accompanied by frame drums. The second and fourth are game songs for jumping rope andjuggling pebbles. Aside from the obvious difference in instrumentation my settings of these songs differ from the Yup'ik originals in other respects. I have extended and varied the melodies and addedcountermelodies ostinato figurations introductions interludes and codas. The first four melodies are drawn from the collection Yup'ik Eskimo songs compiled by Thomas F. Johnston and Tupou L. Pulu andpublished by the University Of Alaska. The fifth was 'loaned' to me by Yup'ik singer and dancer Chuna McIntyre who learned it in his village of Eek Alaska. The poems preceding each piece are rough translationsof the words to the songs. These verses are often cryptic and enigmatic. Their obscurity is increased because some of the words or their meanings have been lost over time.' - John Luther Adams

John Luther Adams' Canticles Of The Sky for String Quartet. Composer's Note: In the Arctic sky the low angle of the sun and heavy ice crystals in the air often produce vivid halos arcs andsundogs (parhelia). Sometimes these phenomena create the illusion of multiple suns. 'Sky With Four Suns' is a musical evocation of such an apparition from sunrise to sunset. Similar visions also occur at night which isthe image behind 'Sky With Four Moons.' 'Sky With Nameless Colors' and 'Sky With Endless Stars' evoke the extraordinary depth and clarity of Sonoran Desert skies. This music is drawn from Canticles of the Holy Wind– a concert-length work for four choirs and vocal soloists. In this version sixteen separate choral parts have been condensed into the string quartet. String designations should be carefully observed. Frequent stringcrossings are employed to create as lush and continuous textures as possible. All sounds should be legato. Bowing is free and full throughout. Total performance duration is about 18:00

John Luther Adams' Four Thousand Holes for Piano Percussion (Vibraphone and Orchestra Bells) and Electronic Aura. Composed in 2010 and dedicated to Stephen Drury. Duration: 32 minutes 30 seconds.'Four Thousand Holes is my own effort to re-appropriate and reclaim for myself something of my own musical past. For the first time since my days as a rocker I've chosen to restrict myself to major and minor triads - thosemost basic elements of Western music (both pop and classical). But I've tried to assimilate them fully into my own musical world. Approaching these simple chords as found objects I've superimposed them in multiple streams oftempo to create darker harmonies and lush fields of sound. In recent years I've been fortunate enough to form a close musical partnership with Stephen Drury. Steve's extraordinary gifts inspired me to exploreexpansive forms and textures (similar to those of my orchestral music) with only one or two performers In essence Four Thousand Holes is a concerto. To begin I composed the score for the electronic tracks. Steve recorded all ofthe individual chords that occur in the score. I took these recordings time-stretched them reversed their envelopes and knit the reversed sounds together with their original decays. The resulting waves of sound I layered intoten independent tracks to create the virtual 'orchestra'. Next I composed the Piano part articulating the peaks of all the electronic tracks simultaneously - a feat of coordination that demands considerable virtuosity from thepianist. Finally I composed another multi-layered part for metallic Percussion sounds that I think of as sparks emanating from the Piano. In Four Thousand Holes strong musical currents fall and rise again andagain as points and lines are juxtaposed with heavy hammered chords. The mix of 'live' and electronic sounds blurs the distinction between musical figure and ground. As in much of my recent music I conceive of the entire piece

Player Score-John Luther Adams' Always Very Soft for Percussion Trio. Player score. 'I began Always Very Soft in the spring of 1973 and completed it more than three decades later. Originally the piece was scored for percussion trio and de-tuned 'cello. I conducted that version in my nal semester at the California Institute of the Arts. In time I came to regard it as my last student work andwithdrew it from my active catalog. Fast forward thirty-some-odd years to the spring of 2007. For quite some time I'd had in mind to compose a perpetual acceleration canon - music that seemsalways to be getting faster but somehow never really does. As I pondered this I remembered that piece from long ago. So I dug out the old score and looked it over. From my new perspective itseemed to me that my younger self had been attempting to compose a continuum of discontinuities - weaving disparate timbres and velocities into a subtly articulated whole. This new version of Always Very Softcontains not a single note from the original version. But I hope it conveys a more coherent and essential distillation of that early musical thought.' - John Luther Adams

John Luther Adams' Five Athabascan Dances for Harp and Percussion. Duration: 16 minutes. 'These pieces are inspired by the music and spirit of the Athabascan people ofAlaska's boreal forest. The first and third dances are based on songs by Joe Beetus a Koyukon elder from the village of Huslia. The second dance is based on a short traditional song of the Dena'ingpeople of the Kenai Peninsula as remembered by the late Peter Kalifornsky and transcribed by the late Thomas F. Johnston. In their original setting these melodies would be sung in unison with no harmony orcounterpoint. Working as a composer in the Western tradition I have extended and transformed them in many ways. I have 'borrowed' and 'set' these melodies with permission and with the hope that my treatment ofthem conveys my profound respect for their origins. The second and third pieces are derived from my setting of poems by Adeline Peter Raboff written in the dialect of her Gwich'in people who inhabit the countryfrom Arctic Village to Old Crow. Player Score-John Luther Adams' Untouched for String Quartet. Player score. Over the years my large ensemble works have sometimes included String Quartet. However I didn't write my first piece forString Quartet alone until I was fifty-nine. Now in my second String Quartet the fingers of the players still have yet to touch the fingerboard. This music contains no normal stopped tones. All the sounds areproduced either as natural harmonics or on open strings. The highest harmonic utilized is the 10th. Some of the harmonics may be more resonant when played as double harmonics. For example the 6th harmonic can beproduced by simultaneously touching the nodes for the 2nd and 3rd harmonics. Dynamics are free. But all the sounds in the air at any moment should be equally balanced. - John Luther Adams

John Luther Adams' The Immeasurable Space Of Tones for Violin Vibraphone Piano sustaining Keyboard and Contrabass. Duration: 30 minutes. 'Number 5 1950 was MarkRothko's last painting before the breakthrough into his mature format. In it the luminous color fields of a classic Rothko are inscribed across the middle with three delicate lines. Describing thispainting and its pivotal position in Rothko's work Brian O'Doherty observes: 'After this the lines disappear completely.' In recent years gesture and figuration have disappeared from my music. What used to bebackground has emerged to become a musical world composed entirely of floating color fields. In this new world I've changed media moving from the orchestra to smaller combinations of acoustical instruments andelectronically-processed sounds. I still think in orchestral terms but this hybrid medium allows me to create orchestral textures for more practical and readily available ensembles. Initially I imagined this as akind of monolithic music -an entire piece as one rich and complex sound. Then I came to hear it as homophonic or heterophonic. And now -in this musical world that I thought was completely free of lines -I've come to hear apolyphony of harmonic clouds. Maybe the lines never disappear completely. Maybe Christian Wolff was right when he quipped: 'No matter what we do sooner or later it all sounds melodic'.' - John LutherAdams
