Vester's famous collections of studies are an ideal introduction to the stylistic aspects of music from the 17th - 20th century. Selected from the works of famous flautists such as Devienne Böhm and Köhler Vester's compilations are quite unique and are standard repertoire.

A terrific book of 20 modern studies for either Alto or Tenor saxophone. Each study deals with a particular aspect of rhythmic playing ranging from jazz rock and funk to contemporary classical. They are moderate length in order to maximise concentration on style and interpretation and have also been compiled in order of difficulty to enable the player to better gauge their progress. Selected as part of the ABRSM Alto Tenor and Baritone Saxophone examinations grades 4-6.

The „Romanian Folk Dances“ are undoubtedly among the most popular works of Bartók. The earliest version is for piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition in 1918; arrangements for many other instruments followed. Now the internationally successful violist Kim Kashkashian presents her arrangement for viola and piano. Proof that Bartók‘s dances are also perfectly accentuated by the warm sound of the viola.

These Six Viennese Sonatinas were not originally composed by Mozart for the piano. They are a contemporary arrangement of the Wind Divertimentos K 439b which Mozart wrote in 1783. The Divertimentos are notable for their conciseness of form and their melodic richness. They therefore make an excellent introduction to Mozart's piano music even though they are not completely typical of Mozart's piano writing. We do not know for certain who made the arrangement but Alexander Weinmann has shown that it was probably Ferdinand Kauer. The order of movements is not the same as in the original; moreover some of the Trios have been exchanged and recapitulations have been shortenedin some instances. The original voice leading has been replaced by voice leading suitable to the piano. The 2oth_century editions by Rehberg (Schott) Rowley (Peters) and the old edition by Kapral (originally published by Universal Edition) are based on a Ricordi reprint edited by Muggelini in 1907; its musical text is unreliable and there are many arbitrary alterations. The present edition is therefore based on the first edition of the arrangement published by Artaria of Vienna in 1803. By comparing it with the score of the Divertimentos (Mozart Complete Edition Series XXIV No. 62 1905) and with the first edition of the parts it was possible to establish the precise articulation and dynamic markings and to add them where needed. For piano pupils simpler versions are suggested in footnotes as are possible executions of ornaments. Metronome markings have been provided by the editor; like the footnotes they should be taken only as suggestions.

The score (UE 35757) also serves as the piano part.. Par WALTER BRUNO. Better known as one of the foremost conductors of the 20th century, Walter also found a place in contemporary composition in Vienna in the early part of the 1900s. Of particular importance is the Quintet, which was premiered by the Rosé Quartet, with the composer at the piano, and described as a resounding success. Universal Edition was an early publisher of Walter works, and they are pleased to publish this first edition of the Quintet, in cooperation with the Bruno Walter estate at the University of Music and Performing Arts of Vienna. This edition is based on the fi rst printed score published in 1927 (Universal Edition UE 8943), and was compared with Kodály’s own conductor’s copy, three additional scores held in the Budapest Zoltán Kodály Archives containing autograph notes, as well as the corrections from the piano reduction and the orchestral parts of the stage work, kept in the archives of the publisher. The present new edition has adopted only as many changes as could be authentically traced back to the composer’s intentions of revision. These being preponderantly dynamic or agogic accents, the provision of a detailed Critical Report was deemed unnecessary. (Ferenc Bónis)/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Par PART ARVO. On 4 July 2011 Arvo Pärt performed his “Vater unser” (“Our Father”) for Pope Benedict XVI at a ceremony in the Vatican celebrating the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Pärt also presented the Pope with a copy of the manuscript, which is dedicated to him. To honour the anniversary, over 60 artists from around the world have been invited to contribute to a new exhibition of artworks. Amongst the artists are the composers Arvo Pärt, Ennio Morricone and James MacMillan. To commemorate this historical occasion, Universal Edition has released a new edition of Pärt’s “Vater unser”, see UE35300. It includes a CD recording of the composer performing the work together with the boy soprano Heldur Harry Põlda, who performed with Pärt at the Vatican. Flute solos from the 18th century
In this edition, the Dutch flutist Rien de Reede undertakes a journey into the 18th century. The collection contains 34 works for solo flute, which have been selected with great care and edited according to music history aspects. Thus, the edition not only shines with a colourful compilation of solo works that stand out from one another in regard to their character. It is also as a historical testimony to the structural state of the flute at the time and the associated technical possibilities as well as the approach to composing for this instrument at that time.
In addition to a number of multi-movement works, Rien de Reede publishes a number of wonderful individual pieces. In terms of composition, they are often characterized by the use of arpeggiated motifs and themes, large intervallic leaps or the ideas of suggested polyphony. Harmonic playfulness, required virtuosity, and the seemingly omnipresent balance of registers provide a constantly renewing tension in the individual movements. Not all works can be attributed to a composer, often one can only speculate. Par PART ARVO. Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Pärt has adapted his celebrated work, Summa, for recorder quartet. Originally written for four solo a cappella voices, it is also available in arrangements for string quartet, string orchestra, and choir with organ. Summa bears the distinctive qualities of Pärt's music, masking its great collective complexity with simplicity in each part. This arrangement can be played by soprano/alto 1/alto 2/tenor instruments or tenor/bass 1/bass 2/great bass. Phrasing marks are consistent with those of the vocal arrangement.
