William Phemister, former Professor of Piano at Wheaton College, has a justly deserved reputation as a fine pianist, teacher, and composer. Therefore, we are proud to present Hymns of Creation, his first book of piano solos published with Lorenz. These selections are for the advanced pianist, and will require some extra practice time, but the results will be worth the time invested. Selected lyrics from each hymn are written below the music, and highlight the arranger's close attention to effectively text-painting each word. In addition to their use in the sanctuary, these arrangements are perfect for concert and recital settings as well.

In this creative and expressive anthem, Brenda Portman incorporates poetry from the familiar hymn that sings of God's mercy and love with words from Micah in which we're asked to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God. Portman's new music flows from the text with captivating lyricism and engaging harmonies. The piano accompaniment is well crafted and adds additional color.

An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ.. Johann Christian Bach was - as his father before him - only very seldom satisfied with the compositions that he put down on paper. Thus did this concerto too undergo many corrections/revisions by the composer and today consists of three movements of similar length. Although they were initially handed down separately at different locations, the motivic relationship as well as the melodic and figurative references among themselves clearly reveals the common identity of the three movements. Not only the final rondo is characterized by highly virtuoso passages, but both the slow, second movement as well as the introductory movement testify to youngest Bach son's compositional greatness, whose works later generations unjustly let almost fall into desuetude. Score available separately - see item CA.3840400.

Bach's Cantata BWV 69a of 1723, which has remained largely unknown to the present day, is now available for the first time in a practical edition with this Carus publication. It has been unjustly neglected as it was overshadowed by the Cantata BWV 69 of the same name, a piece which Bach reworked to celebrate the inauguration of Leipzig Town Council in 1748. On that occasion Bach re-used the parts from 1723 for simplicity, and adapted them for the new use by means of cuts, alterations, and additions - something which certainly did not mean that he rejected the 1723 version. This version can readily be recovered from the parts of 1723, if we explore beyond the alterations of 1748. With its rich wind instruments and great opening chorus, the 1723 cantata is in no way inferior to the later festive music in terms of musical splendor. The text takes the Gospel reading about the healing of the deaf and dumb man as a reason for praise and thanks for God's good deeds. In contrast to the later version, in which God is thanked for the wisdom of the Leipzig authorities, the original version of 1723 is free of such contemporary references, and is suitable for use in worship and concerts in many different ways. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3106900.

Diabelli's church music has unjustly largely fallen into oblivion. In his Pastoral Mass in F, the Austrian composer of the Biedermeier period succeeded in achieving a balance between artistic aspirations and a form suitable for practical performance. With a duration of about 30 minutes, the work is of easy to medium difficulty, and is therefore extremely suitable for amateur choirs with orchestra. The Pastoral Mass is suitable for performance both at Christmas time and beyond.

Justin Heinrich Knecht's compositional interpretation of Moses Mendelssohn's poetic translation of the 6th psalm bears the force of Enlightenment ideas in its music. Effective instrumentation, the targeted use of the choir and vocal soloists together with contrasting dynamics communicate the entire emotional spectrum of this psalm text. Knecht created an early Romantic piece of south German church music which has unjustly lain in obscurity for too long. As in his other psalm compositions, the scoring can be regarded as flexible, allowing parts to be omitted or unavailable instruments to be substituted by similar sounding ones according to the forces available. Score available separately - see item CA.3750100.

Between Beethoven and Brahms, a long neglected workSchumann's last work for solo instrument and orchestra was not given its premiere until 1937, at which time it was also released in an editorially inadequate version. A re-evaluation of Schumann's late oeuvre began in the 1980s, in the wake of which the missing link between the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms (Yehudi Menuhin) also drew increasing attention. Since then, those in the know have come to appreciate the work, whose unique musical and technical demands challenge for both interpreter and listener. This new edition of what is perhaps the most underestimated masterpiece of the Romantic era is the first meticulously prepared Urtext edition of the score. Nothing short of incredible is the fact that the composer's own piano reduction from which Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim played the piece is being published here for the first time! Thomas Zehetmair, who has significantly contributed to the re-assessment of the concerto, assumed the task of providing a sound technical basis to his revision of the solo part.Perhaps this edition will help stimulate awareness and appreciation of this unjustly forgotten romantic violin concerto described by Menuhin as the missing link between the concertos by Beethoven to Brahms.
