The Gospel Mass—a mass for mixed choir, combo and concert band—is based on the gospel music that has spread throughout the world since its creation in America. After Missa Brevis and Missa Katharina this is the third mass fromthe pen of Jacob de Haan. The movements of the mass ordinary as we know it have now been composed in various pop styles that have their origin in the gospel music. We hear, then, not only the classic American gospel style (including thecharacteristic clapping and swing rhythms), but also freer gospel styles that have developed over the course of time. The Credo, for example, is a ballad with rock and funk influences. The Agnus Dei is heard as a slow blues—a genreclosely linked to gospel music. The unique feature of this work, of course, is in the combination of all these pop and gospel elements with the Latin liturgy of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, which results in abeautiful, cohesive whole. As far as we know, The Gospel Mass is the only true gospel mass. The Gospel Mass-a mass for mixed choir, combo and concert band-is based on the gospel music that has spread throughout the world since its creation in America. From the outset my two vocal versions of Mozart orchestral works were conceived as twins. Both models shared not only key of C minor, but the fact that they were composed towards the end of Mozart's life seemed to suggest they were predestined to be arranged as a pair; and finally, their formal structure and, above all, the quotation of a cantus firmus in each piece seemed to bind these two works together. It was more difficult to consider which text was now suitable to render vocally what previously was an orchestral movement. Naturally it should stand out and textually the movement should be raised to another level. The answer was to use another language here. Therefore, I chose the texts Kyrie eleison and Agnus Dei, i.e., the opening and concluding texts of the Ordinary of the Mass. For a performance of both vocal versions in concert I suggest joining them by playing Mozart's great F minor Fantasy K. 608 as an instrumental intermezzo between them. (Heribert Breuer) Kyrie: Vocal arrangement of the Choral of the Zauberflote Agnus Dei: Vocal arrangement of Maurerische Trauermusik KV 477.

Alternatim is a practice dating from the early Christian church that utilizes two or more performing groups or contrasting styles of composition in the presentation of a liturgical text. In these two Agnus Dei settings, plainchant is contrasted with polyphony. Richard Proulx has edited these useful settings that seamlessly combine a familiar chant dialogue (Agnus Dei XVI) for cantor and assembly with choral extensions by Renaissance composer William Byrd based on this same melody. These settings from the rich heritage of the Church can easily be integrated into your community's Communion rite.

First, Oskar Gottlieb Blarr planned the organ editing of Penderecki's Agnus Dei from the Polish Requiem as a private homage to the esteemed master. Meanwhile, the piece has also been successfully performed by other organists, who proved the organ performance of the poignant Agnus Dei sustainable. As in his other organ works, Blarr followed strict criteria: the strict maintenance of intervals, postures, articulation and phrasing.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅBenedictusââ¬Â is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic ââ¬ÅHosannaââ¬Â follows. The ââ¬ÅAgnus Deiââ¬Â is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the ââ¬Åmiserere,ââ¬Â the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the ââ¬ÅGloriaââ¬Â returns. That same motif continues into the ââ¬Ådona nobis pacem,ââ¬Â as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, ââ¬ÅPacem.ââ¬Â Duration 7:33.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. This movement is entirely in Latin and is a beautiful SATB setting (with accompaniment) of the “Agnus Dei†text. A tenor or baritone soloist is featured. Sweet and flowing, this movement makes a perfect stand-alone anthem for your choir. Duration 4:29.

Agnus Dei in a somewhat dark setting with a solo soprano hovering above. The composition by the young Polish composer is particularly suitable for chamber choir concerts, requires full command of the voice, and takes the audience far away from this world.

Tomaso Albinoni‚ Adagio has inspired this alluring choral adaptation by prolific composer No?´l Goemanne. Hints of this classic melody are found throughout the four-part texture. Beginning with a simple pulse in the keyboard, the men state the initial theme in unison and fifths. The vocal writing takes some interesting harmonic turns and contains wonderful solo passages. A keyboard interlude introduces a duet between soprano and tenor and leads us to a concluding homophonic choral section. Agnus Dei will also serve well as a concert performance piece.
