A rising young composer has given us a spirited 21st-century madrigal set to a medieval Christmas text. A finalist in the BBC Radio 3 Carol of the Year Composition Competition 2016, the music throws singer and listener alike into a joyous dance in Dorian mode that culminates in a cascade of alleluias when the mode shifts to Ionian (major) at the close.

Commissioned by King’s Chapel, Boston, Massachusetts, in celebration of its 325th anniversary, this longer a cappella work uses a text assembled and adapted from various Biblical passages. From the composer's introduction: The anthem begins grandly with words from Psalm 89 celebrating God’s all-encompassing faithfulness and love. An alleluia refrain follows and returns several times throughout the work. However, it is not a majestic, Handelian alleluia, but rather one of inward passion and fervent introspection. The next section begins joyously with the familiar prophesy from Zechariah; it is followed by several brief Gospel scenes from the life of Jesus. After another alleluia, words of blessing from Psalm 103 are set vigorously before the work closes with a final alleluia. Doug Andrews has penned an anthem that your choir will be humming all week long! The alleluia text is broken by short fragments of praise such as praise him, come and make a joyful noise to the Lord our God, and of course Sing! The challenge of singing a cappella will raise the bar for your choir—but they will gladly work to meet it on this anthem!
