America is intended for any intermediate to professional concert band looking to honor the United States of America and/or members of the Armed Forces. It is therefore ideal for performance on or around any patriotic holiday. It is not a typical setting of the tune, in that many liberties are taken to showcase each instrument of the ensemble, with the melodic focus constantly shifting. The conductor and performers should seek out these moments, and bring them to life whenever possible. The introduction, mm. 1-12, should be approached in the style of a fanfare, with an emphasis on syncopation and exaggerated nuance in regards to articulation style. Here, hidden beneath woodwind flourishes and triumphant bugle calls, the low voices play quotes of familiar American tunes such as The Star-Spangled Banner (m. 1, beat 3) and Simple Gifts (m. 3, beat 4). In mm. 15-22 the melody is carefully hidden among counter lines. This should be carefully balanced to highlight the melody, while still shaping the counter melodies appropriately. A brief return to the fanfare style occurs in mm. 33-35 before melding back into the chorale style. In regards to dynamics, performers should be reminded that within any single dynamic exists a range of expressive shades. No two notes should be played at the same volume, ensuring direction in even the simplest of phrases. Generally speaking, the fortissimo dynamic should be approached thoughtfully, with the bulk of the sound coming from the lowest voices, and the least from the highest voices.America is intended for any intermediate to professional concert band looking to honor the United States of America and/or members of the Armed Forces. Commissioned to write a piece for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, Davies provided a musical General Assembly of his own: a bright overture based on an Australian aboriginal song which gives rise to 'national anthems' of various kinds and instrumental colourings. Finally the 'anthems' are combined, 'if not triumphantly', Davies says, 'at least in a manner whereby they get along together'. The first performance took place in June 1995 in Nottingham. It was given by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Peter Maxwell Davies. Score (miniature). Duration c. 14mins.

Variations, Nocturne & Finale On An English Sea-Song for Piano and Orchestra Op.60. Orchestral part arranged for a second Piano by David Lyon.
After a brief introduction to the Orchestra, the melody of an eighteenth century whalermen's ballad with verse and refrain 'Blow Ye Winds', is given out, the verse by the Piano, the refrain divided between Orchestra and Piano. Then follow thirteen variations, the last three being pianistic etudes, accompanied Orchestrally. The nocturne evokes the nostalgia of a long voyage and the finale the excitement, dangers and glory of a triumphant chase. In these movements, as well as in the variations, the entiremusical material is derived from the basic theme. The work is designed as a virtuoso concert-piece for the pianist, with supporting Orchestral flashes of colour and points of contrast.

Five suites of early American hymns in new settings for a cappella mixed chorus. As modes of worship developed in early America, so too did their song. With Sweet Manna, gifted composer, conductor, and teacher Alice Parker gives us a glimpse into the past with new settings of early American shape-note songs found in songbooks published between 1790 and 1830. From cheerful gathering songs like My God, the Spring of All My Joy and reflective pieces such as From Deep Distress and Troubled Thoughts, to the joyous march of My Soul, Triumphant in the Lord and the familiar strains of Brethren, We Have Met to Worship (HOLY MANNA), Sweet Manna echoes the lives and the faith of early settlers. All songs in this collection keep the original combination of tune and text found in the sourcebooks, and are beautifully arranged by Alice Parker. The majority of texts are hymns of Issac Watts, while tunes are mostly from anonymous sources. Sweet Manna, however, is best described in Alice Parker's own words, Barn dances and laments, love songs and lullabies, [these songs] speak directly to us over the intervening centuries, telling us once again to 'fill our tongues with praise.' .

Wish You Were Here, written for the Boston Pops, pays homage to Colin McPhee, one of the first western musicologists to study Balinese gamelan, as well as to the great illustrators Carl Barks and Herge' (responsible for Donald Duck & Tintin, respectively). Muhly has written a completely romantic and fanciful gamelan-influenced piece. On top of this twittery and excited music, a long, lonesome melody unfolds. After a desolate interlude with severe, ship's-horn brass, the energetic patterns start again, and the long line returns, this time with a triumphant, revelatory ending.Arranged for orchestra, this piece has a duration of approximately 8 minutes.
