Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U. S. state of Georgia standing at 4,784 ft. It is located in the northeastern part of the state and is part of the southern Appalachians. The mountain received its name from the Cherokee word Itse'yi (New Green Place) or (Place of Fresh Green) referring to its grassy, instead of timbered summit. The term Brasstown came from a confusion of Itse'yi with Untsaiyi (brass). The mountain itself is known to the native Cherokee people as Mt. Enotah. The term Bald is common terminology describing mountaintops that have 360-degree unobstructed views. Brasstown Bald Overture was written to depict the beauty and grandeur of the panoramic views from the top of this mountain. The opening fanfare sets the mood for the majesty of the Appalachians. The addition of the woodwinds during the second time through the fanfare portrays the dancing sunlight across the mountain peaks. The middle section is a quaint folk tune to represent the quiet stillness of the night. The fanfare return and a new day breaks forth.Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U. This suite captures the flavor of the musical sounds indigenous to the mountain people of Appalachia. The first movement is based on the well-loved hymn 'Amazing Grace.' The pensive second movement is titled 'Dulcimer Tune' and provides an excellent contrast to the lively third movement 'Clog Dance' which features wood block and snare drum that simulate the sounds of hill country clogging. Musicologist and writer Samuel Charters (1929--2015) considered blues lyrics a profound cultural expression that could connect all people who love poetry. A pioneer in the exploration of world music, Charters conducted research that brought obscure musicians of the American South and Appalachia into the mainstream. In this landmark volume, the noted blues historian and folklorist presents a rich exploration of blues songs as folk poetry, quoting lyrics by such legends as Son House and Lightnin' Hopkins at length to reveal the depth of feeling and complex literary forms at work within a unique art form.

This work grew out of the co-creator's love for the tunes and texts coming out of the Appalachian Mountains and the shape-note and early Moravian singing tradition. In the words of Tim Sharp, ââ¬ÅWe took the image of bands of angels singing and playing at the Nativity as reported in the second chapter of Luke's gospel, transported that image to Appalachia, and Angel Band is the result.ââ¬Â Containing 8 carols (mostly familiar), a processional and recessional, Angel Band is a fusion of ideas ranging from medieval tunes to contemporary bluegrass.

The book, musician, entertainer, teacher, and recording artist Carol Stober provides melody lines, lyrics, chord symbols, and melody tablature for 35 tunes she learned in Appalachia. The stories woven through the music portray a mixture of life situations that were ever-present in the difficult struggle for survival of our ancestors. The lyrics of many of these songs, although sometimes harsh, give insight into the values of the Appalachian people. The autoharp tablature provides detailed indications for different types of thumb and finger strokes, plucking, and string pinching.
