Composer's Note:

In writing these pieces I had in mind certain difficulties which worry most organists from time to time; and in order to combine, as it were, business with pleasure I thought it worthwhile to concentrate upon one aspect of organ technique in each piece, even at the risk of making them a little more difficult than others in this series.

In Procession the main difficulty lies in the pedals Arabesque, on the other hand could hardly have had a simpler pedal part: its object is to exercise the left hand in producing a smooth, running semi-quaver pattern Pageant with its cross-rhythms, is designed to produce well-disciplinedhands and feet that can, when required, work in conflicting rhythms.

I have kept the registration schemes as simple and straightforward as possible.

“To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Fourteen Arabesque Studies for Flute will enable the pupil to attain brilliant technique on the instrument. Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. Just like Bach's 6 suites for cello solo, these 6 arabesques are composed of a number of distinct movements which follow the suite principle. The melodies in these 6 arabesques are influenced by Mediterranean folk music.

ARABESQUE: Is a subtle and smooth movement of a virtuous disposition based on fast uses of triplets. These oscillate weaving a parabolic picture within a romantic atmosphere. The music disappears gently and mysteriously. PRELUDIANDO: Is the adaptation for piano of the famous prelude of the III Partita for solo violin by J. S. Bach. Staccato and legato, vigour and softness freely run through the Prelude which is integrated through a dramatic pedal before its end. Recording: Columna Musica.

Each volume includes three works with piano, one unaccompanied piece, and one piece for two or more players of the instrument. In this volume for clarinet John Casken's 'Taerset' takes its title from Tarset in Northumberland, inspired by a holiday there, while Julia Usher's 'Subsequent Darkness' is inspired by a game of chess. The solo work is a capricious 'Arabesque' by Richard Orton, who also contributes a quartet for clarinets that plays on diaphragm articulation. David Ellis's 'Berceuse' is an extended lullaby, but not without its troubled dreams.
