Book 1 Bwv 850-J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a German Baroque composer who is revered for the originality and skill of his contrapuntal and harmonic techniques. Although he spent most of his life working as an organist and choirmaster he was familiar with many different Keyboard instruments. He utilised this knowledge when composing The Well-Tempered Clavier (1722) a collection of 24 Preludes and Fugues in which he explored the harmonies accessiblefrom every key. Prelude And Fugue In D Major BWV 850 is No. 5 from Book One of the Clavier. It is written in a typical Baroque form including an extended coda. This popular edition from thehighly-regarded musicologist Orlando Morgan is designed with the performer in mind and is still seen as the best edition available for students today.

Prelude And Ant Fugue With A Crab Canon for Ensemble was composed by Per Nørgård in 1982. Programme Note: The work was commissioned by Nieuve Ensemble (New Ensemble) in Holland and was premiered in December 82 in Amsterdam. As the title suggests the work refers to the baroque genre prelude and fugue but seen through the 20.th century consciousness: The prelude is based - bar for bar - on the famous Bach-prelude in C major from the Well Temperated Piano I which is reflected as in a prism where the 5 inherent parts are magnified or transposed to other octaves or its basic rhytm of 8:5:3 is widered to bigger stretches (orreduced to smaller) keeping its golden section - proportion. The Crab Canon as well as the fugue is inspired by Escher the Dutch aartist creating the Illusionary Realism (with wrong but convincing perspectives etc.) in the way that a real fugue never is undertaken but a rush of parts is always interlocking - and in a big hurry. After a slower cadenza-like section the work closes with a combinatioin of the Bach-prelude-ending and the Fugue theme.Per Nørgård

S. Bach?s works. Considerable evidence suggests that he viewed these three pieces as paradigmatic examples of his transcription technique. Busoni?s explicit labelling of the Prelude and Fugue ?for concert performance? in the title already serves as an indication of the heightened virtuosic requirements. And indeed here Busoni demands that the pianist have perfectly mastered the keyboard always with the aim of delegating to the Piano effectively but still in the spirit of Bach the mighty sound-world of the Organ work.
