French harpist and composer, Henriette Renié (1875-1956) lived in poverty for much of her life. However, this did not stop her from composing significant works for the harp, including Grandmother Tells a Story, an easy piece for beginners of the instrument. Despite being a talented composer, Renié lived at a time where fame and success was socially unacceptable for women. In 1940, Grandmother Tells a Story was published. As a easy piece, this Renié work is suitable for beginners of the instrument, including detailed performance directions and fingerings. For all beginner harpists, Renié's Grandmother Tells a Story is an exciting and varied addition to the repertoire.

Mahler composed his 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1893 and 1894 in Steinbach on the Attersee near Salzburg. He spent most of his days those two summers composing in a tiny hut built to his specifications where he could compose in the meadow on the shore of the lake - undisturbed. Movement 5, What The Morning Bell Tells Me includes the voices of women's chorus, children and alto soloist and is a relatively short 4-minute bright rowdy episode, full of laughing voices, bells and angels. Ohad Wand arranged this great music for 12-part Trombone Choir while studying at the Eastman School and it was subsequently beautifully recorded by the Eastman Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. John Marcellus.

Berg's fantastic setting of this beloved American Christmas spiritual for advanced tenor-bass choirs tells a story of hope and meaning. The various textures throughout the a cappella arrangement with solos add much variety and musical interest. A holiday programming must!.This beloved American Christmas Spiritual, like all spirituals and/or folk songs, tells a story. This is a story of hope and meaning. The introductory solo call and response (mm. 1-7) is hymnic in nature, just to get us started. (Think of it as an effective head fake!) The entrance at m. 8 from the upper three voices (we'll call them the trio part henceforth) is pivotal. They set the stage for the conversation between the singers and the soloist for the rest of the song. From this point, the song is basically a Jazz Trio in vocal form. The bass singers take on the role of the cool dude in the back wearing dark glasses and a beret playing the string bass. They provide the driving force for the forward movement of the entire song. The trio part, basically tenors 1 & 2 and baritones, take on the role of the keyboard providing chordal structure and syncopation. Their job is to fill the listener's ear with sound and rhythm. The soloist tells the story using the known melody and text with appropriate improv opportunities to keep the listeners focused on the message of the song. There is enough repetition to make for easy learning, but this also means that the chords need to snap into position cleanly every time. The Verses are easily identified (there are three) and presented with some small variations in Verse 3 (see mm. 56-58...this only happens once). The Refrain (mm. 30-37) is the part of the song where the singers switch from the Jazz Trio role and actually become a Men's Choral Ensemble. This Refrain is repeated after Verse 3 at mm. 66-71. Between verses 2 & 3, there is not a refrain. Instead, there is a bridge repeated from the introductory material, but used this time to move us into a new key signature. This can be a very exciting moment for the singers as well as the listeners! Measures 72-75 is known in the business as a vamp. It can be repeated once and then move on, OR it can be repeated multiple times, depending on the comfort level of the soloist and the response of the audience. It is important that there be a clear signal from the conductor as to how to end the vamp and move effectively to the actual coda of the song. The ending should be sung with tight control that only looks like reckless abandon! Faces bright; words clean; melody clear; rhythms precise! The procession of King Renaud Op. 19b is a suite in five parts and is based on tales that originated in southern European folk songs, dating back as far as the 16th century. A large portion of these songs are of the genre “Complaintesâ€, songs in which the text gives a detailed description of events of a generally criminal or macabre character. The first movement of the suite is based on the song La porcheronne (The Swineherd). It tells the story of a young woman forced by her mother-in-law to tend pigs while her husband is away fighting in the war. She is freed only when her husband returns, seven years later. The second movement tells the story of La marquise empoisonnée (The Poisoned Marquise). A marquise is coerced by her king to become his mistress. The jealous queen poisons her by means of a bouquet of deadly scented flowers. Despite having the character of a merry dance, the third movement, La maumariée vengée (The Avenged Bride) tells the touching story of Queen Clotilde, persecuted for her refusal to live according to Aryan beliefs.La belle engloutie (The Swallowed Beauty) relates the tale of the young wife of King Renaud. She cannot imagine a life without her husband, who was mortally wounded in the war, and begs the earth to open and swallow her up so that she may rejoin her love. The gruesome content of the final part, Le tueur de femmes (The Wife Killer), bears a strong resemblance to the tale of Bluebeard. The story is about a young wife in danger of being drowned in a pond by her husband, which is what happened to her 13 predecessors. Thanks to her cunning, she manages to turn the tables and contrive her husband's demise.

Distance and Enchantment is a musical essay considering the strikingly common occurrence of people who disappear from home never to return. It takes the form of two meditations on traditional songs which are played together without a break, amounting to a single movement of about eleven minutes duration. The first song, The Dark Eyed Gipsy tells of a woman who of her own accord leaves her home to roam the unknown world with a band of gipsies; and the second A ghaoil lig dhachaigh gu m'mathair mi tells of a girl who wanders a little too far from home on a dark night and is stolen away by the fairies. Scored for Violin, Cello, Viola and Piano. Score and parts included.

In one of the dedicatory poems to his verse play The Shadowy Waters (1906), William Butler Yeats asks: Is Eden far away...? Do our woods and winds and verponds cover more quiet woods, More shining winds, more star-glimmering ponds? Is Eden out of time and out of space? How do you answer such questions? We have only the vague elusive promptings of our own mysterious, troubled hearts to tell us that the Eden we long for is there, somewhere beyond the physical world which frames our existence, in another realm of different dimensions. And - what is most painful to admit - that it is closed to us in the form in which we live and breathe, even if at times we do have intimations..., Yeats is telling us that this paradise, this Eden we yearn for is here - present even if invisible, palpable even if intangible. In his Second Symphony, Mahler meets an angel who tells him he can't get into heaven, he's locked out. The news is shattering. What follows is an inconsolable sorrowing, the same sorrowing that comes when we wake to the realization that we too are locked out of Eden. Eden is the heaven of our longing and desire for release from pain and suffering. Eden is the image in our restive minds that reflects the reconciled, resolved, quiescent state of soul we hunger for. But Eden eludes -because it is not a place. It is a state of soul which answers none of the illusory, hampering conditions that shape and bind us to the real world of our bodies, our appetites, our passions, and our beliefs. I have turned Yeats' question Is Eden out of time and out of space? into its own answering. However near we may sense its presence at times, Eden remains unreachable, ungraspable, unknowable, unthinkable. It forever eludes us. I wrote this music the way I did to shut out -with quietness and otherworldliness - the clamor and clang of the raucous Garish Day, to turn away its tumult and noise, to negate its stridency and chaos. Perhaps in the cleansing stillness and blessing of this emptied-out state of soul, Eden, through still hidden, may not be so far way; though still unreachable, may be close enough almost to touch. In one of the dedicatory poems to his verse play “The Shadowy Waters†(1906), William Butler Yeats asks:“Is Eden far away…?Do our woods and windsand verponds cover morequiet woods,More shining winds, more star-glimmeringponds?Is Eden out of timeand out of space?â€How do you answer such questions? For the emerging mixed choir, Delanoy's arrangement of this timeless spiritual favorite offers energy, variety and is sure to inspire through its uplifting melody of hope and determination for a better life -no matter the obstacle. Concert and festival approved!.Let Me Fly is an American spiritual which, on the surface, tells of a yearning for the promised land of heaven. On a deeper level, its early singers envisioned an escape from slavery, with the Underground Railroad serving as the chariot. In either case, the song is an uplifting melody of hope and determination for a better life, no matter the obstacle. Please take note of the layered section in mm. 55-62, which starts with Part II, adds Part I in m. 57, and completes the layering with Part III at m. 59. The repeated measures of 59-60 allow for an accompanist or soloist to improvise while the choir sings and claps along for as many repeats as desired. The number of repeats is up to the discretion of the conductor. If there is no improvisation, it is recommended that mm. 59-60 be sung three times before moving on.Let Me Fly is an American spiritual which, on the surface, tells of a yearning for the promised land of heaven. The piece was composed at the request of violinist Eszter Perenyi, my colleague at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, and was several times amond the optional pieces of the yearly violin competition for students. It was inspired by the famous 63rd poem of Catullus that tells the story of Attis: the hero of the Greek mythology arrives at the Mount Ida in Frygia, to the invitation of the goddess Cybele, and becomes her lover. The Gallas, certitude priests of Cybele chase him into delirious dance, by the end of which he castrates himself. On waking from his paralysed dream he entreats in vain for his virility and freedom to Cybele, he will remain servant of the goddess for eternity. My work tells the story in four parts: 1) Attis' ecstasy 2) Dance of the Gallas 3) Attis' dream 4) Attis' entreaty. The Catullian galliambic metric that first appears in the 'prologue' of the piece, becomes the organisational principle of almost all musical aspects of it. (Hungaroton HCD 32484).

This is the bizarre and fantastic story of the boy Jacob who is transformed into a dwarf with a huge nose by an mysterious fairy. He spends seven years in the fairy's palace, and during this time becomes a marvellous cook. The years go by as in a dream, and he does not imagine that he is in truth in the body of a loathsome dwarf. When he sees his parents again, they do not recognize him. He is mocked and rejected by everyone. But Jakob is not disheartened! He has to protect himself and survive setbacks and tests until at the end of the story he regains his true form. Zwerg Nase, based on the fairy tale of the same name by Wilhelm Hauff, is a story which gives courage and hope. It is a story which tells of self-confidence and friendship. There are the animals in the fairy's palace, who stand alongside Zwerg Nase, and above all his girlfriend the goose Mimi who is herself an enchanted maiden and is saved from the oven by Zwerg Nase. Mimi knows which magic herb can give him back his true form. And everything turns out well in the end. The text and music convey the magical content of the fairy tale in a playful, yet convincing way. The libretto is catchy in its verse and rhyme, comic ideas alternate with touching and atmospheric passages. Classic and contemporary elements mix together in the setting, oriental borrowings stand alongside rhythmic pieces such as boogie-woogie, tango, and waltz. Written for chorus and solo voices, the Singspiel is suitable for children and young people from 6 to 14 years. It is about an hour in length. Cliffhanger is a programmatic work for string orchestra that harkens back to the days of silent film. This piece tells the familiar story of the damsel in distress who is tied up to the train tracks as a train is approaching. The opening of the piece sets the scene with danger and desperation. By m. 6, our hero is making his way on horseback to rescue the fair maiden. This main melody is developed and passed around the ensemble until m. 36, at which point despair sets in. The music is rich with romantic harmonies and inner lines. Be sure to bring out these inner lines to add to the passion and drama of the moment. It continues to build until a thunderous arrival at m. 49. From there we return to our hero, who is now getting close to the train tracks to save the fair maiden. The tension becomes the highest at m. 61, when we are still not sure if our hero will make it in time. But alas, at m. 68 he swoops in to save the day and rescue the fair maiden. Of course, they live happily ever after. My hope is that your ensemble will have some fun with this style of music. It was adapted from an arrangement I wrote for the new pipe organ at the Walk Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. They wanted some scary train music to show children how the organ was used back before movies had sound. Strings provide a heightened sense of drama with this genre of music.

Written in 2010 for violinists Todd Reynolds, and the sky was still there tells the story of an old friend, Amber Ferenz, and the epiphany that led her to embrace her true self, confront the US Army, and accept a dishonorable discharge under the Army's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. Amber tells her own story in this work, while the violin plays along, providing a sometimes-somber, sometimes-whimsical sub-text. Amber's story, though unique, represents a struggle we all face on some level, whether to confrom to cultural expectations, or defy them in pursuit of greater truths. -- David T. Little.

Till Sailer tells twelve vivid stories of the childhood and youth of the composer Georg Friedrich Handel in Halle, his trials at the Hamburg Opera, his first successes in Italy and his 'second life' in England. In London where Handel had the most prolific time of his life he wrote such masterpieces as 'Water Music' and the oratorio 'Messiah' with the famous Hallelujah chorus. Accurate in historical details, sensitive and always with a touch of humour, this book lets the reader gain an insight into the peculiarities of Handel's personality and the characteristic features of his epoch.

Galea et Bellum was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. Research revealed that it had been the property of Skelte van Aysma, a Frisian officer who fought in the armies of the Princes of Orange Maurice and Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years’ War. This little piece of history was the starting point for this composition. As a leitmotif, the hymn ‘Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ (‘Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant’) has been used. This 17th century melody by Michel Franck, inan arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach, initially appears only in fragments, but grows to full stature toward the end of the work. An ideal contest piece with lots of challenges for your band.
