An alternating stream of thoughts for bass clarinet - free and restless, tender and brutal, angry, singing. This short solo piece, like an exclamation mark, is given by the interpreter * in space to struggle to shake off conventions, in short, to play. The composer - i.a. Professor of media composition (University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) and visiting professor forexperimental composition (UdK Berlin) - encourages quasi-improvisation, a wild ride through emotional states and playing techniques. Caution, risk of explosion!

'Landscape With Deserted House' is a piece of a dark and very individual character, almost a 'gothic piece'. The topos of the deserted house comes from the literature of Victorian England, but also points toward the present time, especially toward Northern Europe where, after half a century of migration from the countryside, countless houses and estates are unoccupied and left to decay. It is especially the percussion part of 'Landscape With Deserted House', mainly played on simple everyday objects, that refers to this aspect of the title while the other instruments create a sound space full of peculiar poetry in finely tuned mixtures. A piece which will delight every professional musician with experience in modern playing techniques.

The present piece is a wind trio reduction of my ensemble piece In Time Entwined, In Space Enlaced (2008), which was in turn an expansion of an original trio for bass flute, cor anglais and viola. Throughout the piece, the three instruments find themselves entangled in various contrapuntal and heterophonic webs. Though their individual identities are generally distinct -- by virtue of their timbral differences -- they seek to blur their boundaries, forging relationships through shared material as they attempt to merge with one another. I was inspired by the surreal expression of love in David Gascoyne's poem Antennae:The timeless sleepers tangled in the bedIn the midst of the sonorous island, aloneThe tongue between the teethThe river between the sandsLove in my hand like laceYour hand enlaced with mine.(Christian Mason, 2012)World premiere: Olive Grove, Delikipos/Cyprus (4th International Contemporary Music Festival), September 9, 2012.

Performance Material on Hire[Solo: Bs - Picc.2.2.2.2 - 2.2.2.0 - Str]In the second half of the 19th century, in Italy, melodrama was still the most practised musical genre, but space for instrumental production began to grow, especially thanks to the Quartet societies which tried to reduce the gap remaining compared to other European countries, offering it to the public with an energy which was certainly praiseworthy. However, they were not the only institutions where instrumental music was cultivated. In this context it must be remembered that music conservatories also played an important role, especially through the music recitals given by the best students. In one of these, which was held at the Milan Conservatory on 9 July 1884, the concert piece Andante e Polacca for bassoon and orchestra by Simplicio Gualco (1861-1942) was performed, a piece which aroused a great deal of interest as stated in the ‘Gazzetta Musicale di Milano’ of 20 July of that year. After the recital, the piece ended up in the Conservatory archives and was never played again. It was rediscovered recently, thanks to the research work on the composer by the musicologists Italo Vescovo and Flavio Menardi Noguera, both connected to the composer’s hometown.
