Remembrance was written in November 2018. In remembrance of what it took for us to be here... was the only original program note. The piece can mean different things to different people; however, it brings unity to all under the theme of remembrance. We fight for many things: love, patriotism, freedom, ideology, possession...all of which have cost tremendous sacrifice. It was the battles, the blood and sweat, and the sacrifice of those that came before us that created the world as we know it. Remembrance is a tender, melancholic reflection that silently gives thanks to every step and every sacrifice that was made to bring us what we have today. Yes, what we have may not be perfect--nor is it anywhere near complete--but with each generation's responsibility to carry the torch and never forget, hopefully we can make everything worth it. Performance Notes This tender piece is an excellent opportunity to explore nuanced phrasing. While many sections may play similar parts, often the phrasing and dynamics are marked differently across the band. Each of these discrepancies should be brought out and add to the perpetual motion of the piece. Encourage confident, yet subtle entrances and furthermore, think about the ends of notes as important as the beginning. Really bring out the hairpins in sections such as m. 29, m. 67, and m. 81 as expressive devices. Despite the piece's major key, through the various levels of dissonance and tension, both the ensemble and the audience should feel the sacrifices and tragedy that this piece celebrates. The tempo should not be much slower than the marked tempos and with the careful observation of the various tempo changes, there should be a constant momentum pushing throughout the piece, all the way past the end that leaves the audience in thought with an uplifting, pensive, and gentle clarinet chord.Remembrance was written in November 2018. “In remembrance of what it took for us to be here...†was the only original program note. Drawing parallels between the spiritual battles we fight and actual battles of physical warfare, the shades-of-patriotic score and picturesque soundscape of this dramatic arrangement conjures up images of wounded soldiers coming home from battle. With cries of it is finished, the war is over, the conflict is won, we Christian soldiers are preparing to go home. Poignant and moving, the somber tones of this great song rise with ambitious hope toward our final act of coming home.

This powerful work pays tribute to the many battles fought between the Native Americans and Europeans (often referred to as The American Indian Wars). The music moves between Native American-influenced themes and western harmonies before moving into an amalgamation of the two. Incredible writing by a teenage composer!

Kimmo Hakola's String Quartet No. 4 op. 95 (2016) was commissioned by the Kimito Island Music Finland and it's dedicated to the Meta4 Quartet. In composer's words, it is the floundering, playful, if necessary defiantly dramatic, surprising, capricious and unrestrained tour de force of a youthful entity.Kimmo Hakola has gone through a number of styles and influences in his career as a composer, his idiom expanding at times to embrace Romanticism, Orientalism and klezmer. He has attained international recognition with an output that spans various genres from intimate solo works to full-length operas such as La Fenice (2011) commissioned by the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Many of his works are expansive and epic: his Piano Concerto (1996), for instance, clocks in at 55 minutes. Hakola says that he sees music as drama. His dramas explore almost Shakespearean extremes, from moments of raging 'sound and fury' and violent battles to quiet moments of meditation and heart-rending monologues.

All of these combine to make The Legendof Celobrium a legendary concert work.

This lovely Son of David print is an image from the book At the Name of Jesus. It will add an instant touch of color and spirituality to any office or home. Among other things, King David was a notable musician and poet. In fact, through the psalms, he set the tone for what would become the liturgical music for the past thousands of years! In this image, Jesus sits beneath his family tree as the 28th descendant of David, symbolized by the 27 pomegranates that hang over his head. He plays the harp, and perhaps chants Psalm 137, as he leads us through our own battles and captivities. Fits a standard 11 x 14 photo frame. It makes a great gift for musicians and music lovers!

Compiled and edited by Amy Porter, Treasures for Flute and Piano is acollection of Philippe Gaubert’s shorter works for flute and piano. Gaubertwas a multi-talented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a composer, teacher, and master conductor. Over his lifetime, he became one of the mostimportant musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first halfof the 20th century. Trained in theory and harmony at the Paris Conservatory,Gaubert was also deeply influenced by other composers at the time, includingDebussy, Fauré, and Dukas. Editor Amy Porter is a distinguished Professorat The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and hasbeen praised by critics for her exceptional musical talent and her passion forscholarship. This edition represents eleven of the sixteen works from AmyPorter and Dr. Penelope Fischer’s video study guide, “The Gaubert Cycle: TheComplete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubertâ€.Philippe Gaubert (1879–1941) was a very important teacher and flutist in our classical flute playing lineage. In this edition we have gathered his beautiful, shorter compositions for flute and piano all in one place, to be cherished as “Gaubert’s Treasures.â€Philippe Gaubert personified the modern French school of flute playing as introduced by his teacher Paul Taffanel (1844–1908) at the Paris Conservatory. Gaubert was a multitalented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a gifted composer, teacher and master conductor. Over his lifetime he became one of the most important musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Gaubert’s musical andpedagogical gifts to us are passed along through generations of students and continue to touch the hearts of many who listen to his fine, and refined, music.Philippe Gaubert studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Raoul Pugno, Xavier Leroux, and then for a brief time with Charles Lenepvu. It was after this study that he won the famous Prix de Rome second prize in composition. Even with his schooling of theory and harmony in Paris, he was deeply influenced by other composers of the time, namely Debussy, Fauré and Dukas. Between the years of 1905–1914 Gaubert’s early workswere arrangements and short pieces written for the year-end final exam pieces at the Conservatory.Between 1914–1918 Gaubert served in the French Army during World War I, most notably in the battle of Verdun in 1916. This was considered one of the largest battles against the Germans in WWI. He was wounded but his creativity level was not dampened. He was rewarded for his service and awarded medals for his bravery. It was during this time that he found the energy to compose his Deux Esquisses or 2 Scenes, and sketched out his first flute sonata.Gaubert composed his remaining five flute and piano works after 1922 in Paris, and clearly his poetic soul was transformed from the earlier years. He took in new forms and styles of compositions such as a Suite, a Ballade and a Sonatine. He also completed his Second and Third Sonatas for Flute and Piano, all of them dramatic works in terms of compositional techniques and grandeur of tone.Gaubert composed music easily throughout his lifetime, especially during summer breaks when the orchestra and Paris Opera seasons were on hiatus and he was not conducting. He loved literature and poetry which inspired over thirty vocal works from 1903 through 1938.He also wrote twenty-six instrumental chamber works for other instruments: oboe, cornet, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, harp and combinations of these instruments with piano. Some of these were commissioned jury pieces, but many were for his musician friends.Six full-length stage works, both ballets and operas for the stage, several tone poems and symphonies were written throughout his lifetime. This edition represents eleven out of the sixteen works from our video study guide “The Gaubert Cycle: The Complete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubert†with guest pianist Tim Carey. Omitted in this edition are Sonatas Nos. 1–3, Ballade, and Sonatine.

This tone poem, suggested by the 4th Century struggle of the Visigoths within the Roman Empire, contrasts the slow opening four-note motive in the low brass, with quicker more rhythmic material depicting the battles of the tribe with the Roman legions. From these elements, Sean O'Loughlin has crafted an exciting and sonorous piece that will show off the capabilities of a developing young band to great effect. A large percussion section is used with great skill to energize this serious concert work.

With Emperor, French composer Thierry Deleruyelle wanted to create a descriptive musical work depicting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. The first movement represents the idiosyncrasies of this famous personality as well as his dramatic mood swings. The second movement is dedicated to his great love, Josephine Beauharnais. A contrasting third movement depicts Napoleon the fearless general and the countless battles he waged. A truly powerful work about one of histories truly powerful men.

This monumental programmatic work from the pen of Rob Romeyn captures the myth and legend of Zeus, the mythical master of the gods and men. A sky god, he controls lightning, which he uses as a weapon, and thunder. It opens as Zeus becomes involved in the Trojan war, hurling lightning bolts at his opponents. The tension soon subsides as we are introduced to the eternally beautiful Hera, whom Zeus would eventually marry. The music then ensues as our story unfolds, as Zeus made his domain the mountaintops and clouds where he could survey all creation, and inflict pain and justice on all evildoers. Tension builds as Zeus battles Typhon in hand to hand combat, ending ultimately with Zeus throwing the enormous Mt. Etna at the monster, pinning him underneath. From here, the tension subsides, and a beautiful lyrical section builds to an ending of incredible power and grandeur as Zeus again reaffirms his stature as the ruler of Mt. Olympus. This exceptional work is a wonderful addition to any concert or festival performance!
