"In the Bottoms" is a Suite of five numbers giving pictures of moods or scenes peculiar to African-American life in the river bottoms of the South. It is similar in its expression, and in a way continuation, of the sentiments already set forth in the "Magnolia Suite," but suggests ideas incidental to life in a more particular geographic territory. Movements: 1. Prelude (Night) 2. His Song 3. Honey (Humoresque) 4. Barcarolle (Morning) 5. Dance (Juba).

Falling is a song cycle based on two poems by Kathryn Stripling Byers (Snowbird and Lost Soul) and excerpts from David Bottoms’ longer three-part poem, In a U-Haul North of Damascus. The poems have been arranged in a sequence that forms a four-part narrative of conflict, separation and the possibility of consolation and renewal. Full of restless energy and bursts of passionate lyricism, Falling is a challenging work for a mature singer. The vocal range calls for a singer who can rise to the high B above that treble staff and descend to the F sharp below the piano part. This piece is transcribed from the orchestral original by the composer and Arthur Bloom, edited by Lisa Moore, and is challenging but idiomatic. The score and parts for the orchestral version are available from the publisher’s rental department.

The Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) is committed to cultivating Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in the international guitar community and in the repertoire published for the instrument. Many factors, including a composer's race, gender, and sexual orientation, have historically created a narrow representation of our community in the classical music canon. For this first volume of the GFA Spotlight Series, the GFA commissioned seven new works by composers of color. The second volume of this series will follow with seven transcriptions of existing pieces by composers of color. These commissioned pieces and transcriptions were premiered by students in the GFA Mentorship Program in 2021.With this collection, the guitar takes a step towards a more inclusive and representative repertoire that nurtures creativity and inclusion for generations of guitarists to come. Growing the canon enriches the musical experiences of our entire international guitar community through exposure to diverse perspectives and voices, complementing the invaluable lessons we learn from the existing contributions of pieces that form the canon.

Death by Tyshawn Sorey was commissioned by the L. A. Opera for a streaming premiere by mezzo-soprano Amanda Lynn Bottoms in February 2021, with pianist Howard Watkins. Its text, by the great Black poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, imagines just a glimmer of light dawning over a bleak, nightmarish landscape, haunted by death, which the composer explicitly connects to the current conditions and precarity of Black life in America in the 20th and 21st centuries. (Dunbar himself died in 1906 at the age of 33). This slow and melancholy setting expands the poem into a five-minute lament.
This piano/vocal score includes the full text of the poem as well as a brief program note from the composer. Clarifying the racial contexts surrounding the piece, Sorey requests that the roles of both vocalist and pianist be played exclusively by Black American performers.
