About Build-A-Band Series
The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. (Please note: In some of these arrangements the 4th Part, and the Bass Part are the same, making it possible to play those arrangements with only 4 parts.)

A great fit for choirs of any age or ability! Harry Belafonte sang this joyful West Indies song on his 1956 album Calypso. Dr. Robinson's arrangement has just the right amount of repetition versus development, and will come together quickly with intuitive voice leading and some stylistic syncopation. One a cappella refrain just after the key change features the conga to keep the groove going, and a final descant adds a rhythmic counterline above. Build up the Jamaican vibe with our light SoundTrax accompaniment or the notated percussion part (available free online). The theme: build your house on solid ground.

Let us build a house is the closing hymn of Kim André Arnesen’s large-scale work, The Stranger. Instead of a typical majestic endingto a large work, Arnesen went for a quiet one with only an unaccompanied choir. As the composer comments, 'sometimes a message feelsstronger like that and makes us listen more carefully'. The text is from the hymn by Marty Haugen, which concludes 'Let us bring an end to fear and danger: All are welcome in this place.' A stillness and serenity pervades this short piece, suitable for intermediate choirs.
