This dashing work in one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's more frequently heard German Dances (K. 605, No. 3), which he specifically titled The Sleigh Ride. The composition was originally written during the last year of Mozart's life in 1791. That year was one of his more productive years, composing other well known masterpieces such as The Magic Flute, Piano Concerto in B-Flat Major, The Concerto for Clarinet, and his very last composition, the Requiem which he finished only twelve of the fifteen sections before his death. German Dance captures the wonderful melodies, lively rhythms, and ingenious colors of Mozart's style. This is a charming arrangement with three separate bell parts bringing forth the festive sound of ringing sleigh bells. Arranged to re-create classical scoring, this joyful programmatic piece will be a favorite with young musicians and audiences alike.

Brilliant, clever and brimming with excitement, another ingenious Himes masterpiece! The objective of Thingamajig is to create a whimsical contraption of sound in the same spirit as the late Rube Goldberg, which appeared as cartoons in the New York Evening Mail. It uses melodic and rhythmic patterns - with help of conventional and unconventional percussion as well as verbal effects from the band members - to convey a unique attempt at inventiveness. The enthused percussion section will use instruments such as a metal pipe, kitchen pans and a bicycle horn.

When one sees the name of Elliot Del Borgo, it is immediately associated with concert band music of the highest order. Dervish Dance is no exception. Here is an energetic dance set in the Dorian mode (natural minor), which gives it the Middle Eastern flavor. The opening section can be played as fast as possible followed by a contrasting slow section. The closing is a powerful depiction of the famed Whirling Dervish. Even though the piece is speedy, the notes lay well under the fingers, and it sounds much more difficult than it is. A great festival opener or closer!

Ryan Nowlin is a new composer to the Standard of Excellence In Concert series of concert band compositions for young bands. Mr. Nowlin currently teaches instrumental music in the Breckville-Broadview Heights School District (Ohio) where he directs high school wind ensemble, marching band, and jazz ensemble. Ryan's Steadfast Overture uses lyrical melodies that are very accessible to the beginning musician. Written in overture form, this piece gives young students a chance to be expressive. The main theme in each occurrence is treated in a different fashion, keeping it fresh to the ear. The Voice on the Mountain was written for Mike Veak, a band director who dedicated 30 years of his life to teaching instrumental music in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nolan Schmit begins the piece with a flute solo representing a solitary voice on a mountain. The voice begins to build in strength and intensity as it travels down the mountain, is heard by others and is communicated to distant lands. This is a musical metaphor for a teacher - a solitary voice - who impacts generations of students. This is really a tribute to all band directors. A dramatic setting with an explosive ending.
