Being one of the most influential musicians during the shift from the Renaissance to the Baroque era, it is no secret that the composer leant himself primarily to vocal and sacred works. However, his Canzona per Sonare No. 4 represents an important turn, not only in the composer's career, but in musical history. Composed in 1608, this piece helped pave the way to what would soon become the new Baroque concerto style, which remains popular to this day. King's arrangement of this historical work is indispensable for Brass Ensembles. &rdquo.

This piece comprises a series of variations on the melody of “Ami, dans cette vie” (“Friend, in this life”), an 18th century French song. Like the famous poem “Canzona de Bacco” by Lorenzo de' Medici, this song invites the listener to enjoy life, friendships, love and wine while there is still time to do so. The epicurean nature of this text contrasts with a deeply melancholic melody, a contradiction which is explored in the present work. After a somewhat turbulent first part, the original melody is revealed in a serene and pensive middle section which highlights several soloists. In the last movement, the atmosphere is transformed to become increasingly exuberant, like a Bacchus incantation. The piece concludes with a final dazzling statement of the original theme. Canzona di Bacco was commissioned by the Vesoul Municipal Wind Band, who premiered the work on 24 June 2022 at the Edwige Feuillère Theatre in Vesoul (France), under the direction of Mathieu Anguenot.

In his dedication of 20th June 1608 to Count Scripo Nascica Fantagucci, the printer Alessandro Rauerij emphasized that his collection contains some of the most outstanding works by the most modern and prominent musicians, and we do in fact find names such as Giovanni Gabrieli and Girolamo Frescobaldi, and also the other masters we have reprinted were famous far beyound their day. The humorous text of the duet refers to a madrigal and is redolent of Steffani’s wit. The chamber duet is the form by which the composer was best known, and La canzona is an accomplished example, displaying effortless counterpoint in the duet movement and technical ingenuity in the two solos, built on related ground basses. There are good reasons, therefore, for attributing this piece to Steffani.
