Goethe’s Faust has already been set to music by various renowned musicians, such as Berlioz, Busoni and Spohr, and indeed Charles Gounod, who built his eponymous opera around the tale. Gounod’s Faust is primarily known for its lovely melodies and its beautifully expressive vocal parts and subtle orchestrations. One of the high points of this opera is doubtless this impressive Cavatina (“Salut, demeure chaste et pureâ€). Wil van der Beek has arranged the Cavatina with the euphonium as solo instrument.Goethes Faust is in het verleden al door verschillende componisten - waaronder Berlioz en Spohr - op muziek gezet. Premiering on May 22, 1813, at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice, L'italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was a success, with subsequent performances in Vicenza, Milan, and Naples. It was later performed at His Majesty's Theatre in London in 1819, and again in New York in 1832. Rossini's mixture of opera seria and opera buffa is notable — L'italiana in Algeri tells the tale of Isabella, an Italian girl who uses her wiles to trick unwitting Mustafà, the Bey of Algiers, into freeing her and her lover, Lindoro from his palace. The opera itself fell somewhat out of favor in the 19th century but has been revived frequently since World War II with many successful productions. The sorrowful cavatina Cruda sorte! Amor Tiranno! takes place in Act I, and serves as the introductory aria of Isabella, who finds herself shipwrecked in Algiers. The aria is preceded by the chorus Quanto Roba! Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Contralto: Mixed Chorus.

John Ireland's 'Cavatina' for violin and piano, which was probably composed in 1904, also exists in a slightly expanded version for organ and shows the composer's mastery of the popular salon style of the time. Unavailable for many years, it is now reissued in a new edition that includes a scholarly note by Geoffrey Bush.

For quite a few years before I took up the clarinet I was a serious recorder player, and I wrote a little suite of pieces in the style of Byrd and Farnaby for recorder and spinet called 'His Folly'. Some years later I decided to write a couple of simple very simple pieces for flute and piano which were also within the treble recorder range. The first was Cavatina (29 bars in total) and the second was Roundelay (45 bars in total). A few years ago my flautist wife Wendy (for whom the pieces were originally written) played them through, and it occurred to me that each of them could be capable of being considerably reworked. I did this and in the course of re-composing the Roundelay became so different that I felt the original title was no longer appropriate. Thus the rather slender Roundelay became a fully fleshed Villanelle.
