Chinese Dream

Par ZHANG ZHAO. 'Chinese Dream' was completed in 2014 and won the gold medal at the CCTV Piano Grand Final Competition in the same year. The work was inspired by the 'Yi Zhuan? written by Confucius for the 'I Ching'. The I Ching is the source of Chinese culture. To inherit the essence of Chinese culture, Confucius wrote a set of ten commentaries with his descendants, also known as the 'Ten Wings', which means 'flying'. Professor Zeng Shiqiang of Taiwan once said, 'Confucius dreamed that the Zhou Yi could influence the world and help the world build unity.? Another inspiration for the composition came from the time when Emperor Kangxi tried to play the Guqin (a plucked seven-string Chinese musical instrument) piece: ?Pu?an Mantra? on an ancient piano, which expressed the emperor?s desire for the integration of Chinese and Western civilizations. / Date parution : 2023-06-16/ Répertoire / Piano

Par LIANG LEI. I was fascinated with the Chinese landscape painter Huang Binhong (1865-1955), particularly with the albums the artist painted when he was nearly blind from cataracts. The image that inspired this composition was a detail taken from the painting. The detail was reconstructed by high-resolution scanning, and it reveals an intricate world hidden within the paintings' brushstrokes. It draws us into the landscape of microscopic elements - a fiber in the rice paper, or the trace left by a single hair in the brush. 'Marco Polo' is an opera about journeys and marks a further stage in the composer Tan Dun (now best known for his work on the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon)'s own journey - an exploration of a new language of musicand performing arts through the fusion of Western avant-garde style with Eastern accent. The spiritual journey - the cycle of the spirit and of Nature - coexists with a physical journey from West to East. The former is explored in'The Book of Timespace' through the participation of Shadows Memory and Nature in Peking opera style. Interwoven are the legendary adventures of Marco Polo as he makes his journey from Italy to China. These sections are writtenin a more Western opera style combining avant-garde and theatrical traditions and are played out by Beings although with underlying echoes of the simultaneous spiritual journey provided by historical figures of Dante Shakespeare and Li Po. Along with the geographical journey from West to East there is an important musical journey. Above the orchestra and chorus there is a spicy ensemble of medieval European Indian Tibetan andChinese instruments which illustrate the changing scenes of the geographic journey. The fantasy-dream world of the spiritual journey and the exciting stories of Marco Polo's voyage are two operas that merge to the same goal thediscovery of experience from past to present to future - from the known to the unknown.
