The concept of this piece is based on a harmonic lay-out, it has been composed using huge chordal succsessions out of which the music follows meanderlike paths alternating between layers. Duo Concertante is outlined by soloists yet the ensemble articulates deeper levels in the musical material. The composer wanted to focus very much on the musical Style of the piece and there are elements of puristic, serial music on display as well as minimalistic approaches recognizable. Lindberg sums up the piece by describing it as a kaleidoscopic writing based on a maximal variety brought out from limited musical material. Work for Solo Clarinet and Cello with Chamber Ensemble.

Igor Stravinsky originally wrote the Danses concertantes for a California-based entertainment orchestra. However, the five movementsare more than purely orchestral dances. The piece is reminiscent of a ballet suite. The two marches at the beginning and end mark the entrance (prologue) and departure (epilogue) of the dancers, with two of the middle movements - 'pas d'action' and 'pas de deux' obviously alluding to the ballet. The arrangement for two pianos by Ingolf Dahl is not just a reduction of the orchestral writing,but deliberately intended as an independent concert version.

Fantasias Concertantes for Bassoon and Guitar by Carlos Pavan. Composer and guitarist Carlos Pavan was born in Argentina and has lived in New York City since the year 2000. In three movements, After Bartók is inspired by Concerto for Orchestra's first movement (the trumpet's theme/quartal harmony/octatonic scale), After Hindemith is based on Symphonic Metamorphosis (2nd movement Turandot) using pentatonic/whole tone scale/contrary motion counterpoint, and After Stravinsky is inspired by The Rite of Spring & Symphonies of Wind Instruments, using mostly octatonic harmony and jazz concepts.

In Ballata Concertante (2015-2016) Lintinen looks back in time, to the Italy of the trecento and specifically the Renaissance Florence. The music of the trecento may provide the starting point for stylistic allusions but it is anything but a one-to-one correspondence. It may speak the language of the 14th century, but it does so with a modernist accent, rather as the Neoclassicists last century spoke the language of the 18th century. The archaic-sounding opening section harks back to the music of the trecento, but the cello melody a little later already comes closer to the present day. Lintinen compares the impression to that of a tourist travelling to Florence today and becoming immersed in Renaissance art. Lintinen's ensemble is the same as that of Schubert's Octet. He did not, however, aim at Schubert's orchestral sound. The music of the first half is coloured by the alternation of strings and winds. Lintinen says, The presence of three wind players inspired the idea of a three-voice group of soloists for which I could write as for three singers. Ballata concertante is a rhythmically vibrant piece, and since it is intended for performance without a conductor, the episodes are naturally linked together by means of such devices as rhythmic modulations. Duo Concertante contains five brief movements of contrasting character. The first movement functions as a short prelude, with the viola and bass combining to form alternating high and low harmonies and trading off solo lines. The second movement is a playful scherzo, played pizzicato by both instruments, while the third movement is the central, lyrical movement of the work, with undulating natural harmonic tremolos and a rhythmically driving interruptive middle section. The fourth movement consists almost entirely of quickly bowed natural harmonics with fleeting rhythmic tremolos on both instruments. The final movement contains rapidly driving music in constant motion, interrupted twice by cadenza-like free sections which are non-synchronized. The two instruments then come together for the final push to the end.Duo Concertante was written for James and Deborah Dunham on the occasion of their 35th anniversary, with support from the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. The circumstances of the origin of Sinfonia concertante in Eb major (KV 297 b) are disputed; it was probably created in Paris in April 1778 for four famous solo instrumentalists of the Mannheim Court Chapel. In his arrangement, Werner Egk included and extended the concertante aspect: In 1981, a few weeks before his death, he arranged the work for two oboes, clarinets, horns, bassoons each and double-bass so that now a solo quartet is opposed to a tutti quartet. For wind ensembles, this piece is a valuable addition to their repertoire, for Mozart lovers it is a charming view from an unfamiliar perspective.

Jan de Haan drew inspiration for this work from five paintings exhibited in The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, one of the largest and most versatile museums in the world. He used the melodious Andante cantabile from the String Quartet Op. 11 by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as its starting point. Thus, he created his own musical painting, which is just as varied as the underlying canvases--from Cheerful Company by Dirck Hals to Dance II by Henri Matisse. A true work of art!
