Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet (Concerto per il Clarino) in E-flat major was written in 1796 for his friend Anton Weidinger. Weidinger invented a keyed Trumpet which could play chromatically. The Concerto is the first of its kind because of this new technique and Haydn includes melodies and scales in the middle and low register, unknown to the earlier valveless instruments. The work is in the traditional three movements, Fast-Slow-Fast exploiting scales, arpeggios, trills, legato and marcato techniques. Justin Bland has skillfully arranged this great work for Solo Trumpet, 9-part Brass Ensemble and Timpani. Instrumentation is:Solo Trumpet in E-Flat, Trumpet in E-flat, 2 Trumpets (Cornets) in B-flat, Flugelhorn, Horn, 2 Trombones, Euphonium, Tuba and Timpani. The work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Sondra K. Tucker has set the hymn O God, Our Help In Ages Past for three to five octaves of handbells, organ and/or brass quintet and timpani (BP.HB379B), and congregational singing, in her arrangement of Festival Concertato on St. Anne. The sprightly introduction gives way to a majestic arrangement of the hymn tune before the congregation comes in to sing. During the choral portion, suggested voicings and accompaniments are provided to add extra aural interest. Use this piece in a general worship service, or to pull out all the stops for an Easter Sunday service.

The Concerto for organ, strings and percussion by Kay Johannsen, Kantor of the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart, is a valuable addition to the repertoire for organ and orchestra. It is a work composed to appeal to both performer and audience alike - with thrilling rhythmic sections as well as moments of great intimacy. The organ part, for a three manual instrument if possible, is shown to its best advantage in many and varied tonal colors, ranging from the most delicate solo registrations to powerful forte. The organ writing is demanding, but well within the capabilities of experienced organists. Precise registration suggestions are contained in the score. The string orchestra (minimum 4/4/3/3/1) is scored with sophistication, with solos for all instruments. The percussion is for two players - a part for timpani and one for other, readily available percussion instruments. By avoiding the use of wind and brass instruments, the work can also be performed where the tuning of the organ is not ideally suited to modern orchestral pitch. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1808500.

Rihards Dubra (born Latvia, 1964) wrote his piano concerto – Liepaja Concerto No. 3 – in 2012. A 33-minute work for solo piano and symphony orchestra comprising triple wind and brass, percussion, harp and strings, the concerto starts with a mournful piano melody. It has an elemental beauty – we hear water in the sonorities of harps and chime-bells, earth in the rhythmic formulae, and fire in his colourful harmonic sequences – ending with a majestic and vibrant conclusion.
This full score (EP 73403) is now available as part of the Peters Baltic Library.

I wrote this piece with a darker sonority and an emphasis on lyricism, qualities that I associate with the viola. In the first movement, titled Fantasia, the viola begins with a quiet and free cadenza, becoming more passionate until the woodwinds join in dialogue with the soloist. Gradually the rest of the orchestra enters, exploring ideas from the solo cadenza while introducing a new theme that reappears in the last movement. The second movement is a scherzo, mischievous in mood with the orchestra and viola trading barbed jokes. The antics are interrupted by a brass chorale with embellishment from the viola. The scherzo then resumes with prominent contributions from the bassoons. The last movement, titled Nocturne, plays with different kinds of music associated with the night. A sensual and romantic atmosphere gives way to something more menacing and ultimately violent. After a climax from the full orchestra, soft strings and solo viola lead us into the coda, taking an ambiguous idea from the first movement and transforming it into a lyrical and heartfelt prayer. The concerto ends with the solo viola ascending on the crest of an orchestral wave of sound.
