A lot is known about the American composer Leroy Anderson. This son of Swedish immigrants played the piano, organ, accordion, trombone, tuba and double bass. He spoke several languages fluently and graduated from Harvard with first-class honours. While on military service, the army also commissioned him to write a manual on Icelandic grammar. He already started writing musical arrangements as a student, and from his 30th year arranged and composed for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Such melodiesas Serenata, The Typewriter, Sleigh Ride and Buglers Holiday made him world famous. His best-known work, Blue Tango, reached number one in the US charts in 1952, and it sold more than a million copies. In 1975, a year after hisdeath, he was given a star at the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Most of his works last no longer than three minutes, about the maximum length of a single at that time. One work that lasts longer is his 1953 Piano Concerto in C for piano and orchestra. The first performance was in Chicago, conducted by the composer and with Eugene List at the piano. However, after three performances he was no longer happy with the work and withdrew it. He always intended to revise it, but never got round to it. Itwas only in 1989 that the Anderson family decided to republish the work. This three-part composition is on the one hand characterised by a careless elegance, but on the other one can hear the influence of Rachmaninoff, Copland, Gershwin, and evenBeethoven and Mozart, as well as the Viennese classics.Anderson used the sonata form for the first movement. It ends with a cadenza that carries us on into the second part (in e minor). The third part is a typically cheerful American folk dance in2/4 time, a so-called Hoe Down, with a lilting, lyrical passage as its middle section. At the end comes a solo passage followed by a rapid close. In this piano concerto, Anderson combines a rigidly classical form of composition with simple andappealing themes and elements from light music. So this work is a perfect synthesis of light music and what is called serious music, in the same way as Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue. A work that can be played equally well in a concerthall, at an open-air concert or even a pop concert. Vocalise is the second movement from Satoshi Yagisawa’s Trombone Concerto. Yagisawa finally decided to publish this movement as a separate piece, since it has been frequently performed independently and on the euphonium, tenor saxophone or the trombone. Just like the title implies, Vocalise exhibits a warm, gentle chorale-like feel that any audience will enjoy. Also available in an edition with piano accompaniment. Saxophone Concertino is one of a series of solo concerti by Japanese composer, Satoshi Yagisawa. In this piece, the solo saxophonist's voice does not separate from the concert band, but rather develops musically and gently in combination with it. This work enables the soloist to showcase his ability with variety and grace.

In 2008, composer Philip Sparke published the latest volume of his instrumental books, Super Solos. Young German flautist Meinhard Drescher was so taken with these solos that his father secretly commissioned the composer toarrange three of the solos (Little Overture, Berceuse and Moto Perpetuo) into a mini-concerto for flute and concert band, which was presented to Meinhard as a 16th birthday present. The concerto is composed in B-flat Major; the solo part is for Trumpet in C. Finished in 1948, the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra was composed by the French composer, conductor and the 1927 winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971), and lasts approximately 14 minutes. Dedicated to the trumpeter Ludovic Vaillant, soloist at the National Orchestra, the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra was premiered in Paris in 1949. The first part, which lasts 7 minutes, Allegro and Cadenza, begins with a trumpet cadenza and a quiet snare drum background. The Nocturne follows as the second part of this Concerto, and the Finale, the shortest part of the concerto, ends up with a cheerful cartoon-music theme. Henri Tomasi also composed a variety of concerti for alto saxophone and for trombone, as well as some ballades.

This concertino was written to a commission by Japanese percussionist Kazuko Ogawa as an addition to Satoshi Yagisawa’s concerto series (trumpet, trombone, marimba, saxophone, and clarinet with wind orchestra). The world premiere was performed by Kasukabe Kyoei Junior and Senior High School Wind Orchestra with guest percussionist Kazuko Ogawa, conducted by Jotaro Tsuga, director of the orchestra in 2009. The effective usage of the solo percussion and elegant orchestration has been greatly appreciated since the premiere. Saxophone Concertino is one of a series of solo concerti by Japanese composer, Satoshi Yagisawa. In this piece, the solo saxophonist's voice does not separate from the concert band, but rather develops musically and gently in combination with it. Met Saxophone Concertino voegt Yagisawa weer een compositie toe aan zijn reeks van concerti waartoe ook Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Marimba Concerto, Concertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra als ookClarinet Concerto behoren. The effective use of solo percussion, combined with an elegant orchestration, brought a warm reception at the premiere of this work from Satoshi Yagisawa’s ‘Concertino Series’. Yagisawa’s style is usually considered as rather dramatic, however, inthis piece he adds a whole new dimension to his compositional skills. Contrasts was written for, and dedicated to, trombone soloist Dr. Brett Baker. As the titles indicates, contrasting elements characterize this challenging piece. The slow movement Sounds has a somewhat dark and sombre atmosphere, with complex harmonies and special sound effects. However, the second movement, Caprice, is energetic, entertaining, virtuosic and somewhat whimsical - quite a contrast indeed with the first!

Claudio Monteverdi composed this toccata as an instrumental introduction for the opera L’Orfeo (1607). According to the composer, this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo, who enchanted nature with his music, is tragic, as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey, one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintetconsisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually, these five players join the band, after which the tutti version follows two times. You can also have the brass play from the gallery during the second or third time for a double choir effect.
