Composé en octobre 1999 alors que je vivais à la résidence pour artistes d'Edenkoben (Allemagne), You are connected résulte d'une commande de l'Etat pour le trio à cordes de Paris. Cette oeuvre tire sa matière musicale de sources multiples, voire antagonistes, unissant dans un même souffle dramatique des idées fondées sur des gestes 'naturels', 'traditionnels' des instrumentistes à cordes (dynamiques en adéquation avec le mouvement de l'archet, mélodies lyriques dans l'aigu du violon...), avec d'autres inspirées de l'univers électroacoustique (transposition de la trame musicale correspondant à l'accélération du discours...). La dialectique instrumentale 'geste concret / procédé abstrait' est un des éléments qui rythment la forme. Aboutissement d'un processus d'accumulation quasi-linéaire, la section finale de la pièce est la transcription pour le trio des sonorités émises par un modem lors d'une connexion au réseau internet (d'où le titre de la pièce). Cette coda apparaît comme une résolution des tensions accumulées dès le début de l'oeuvre, dans la mesure où elle est le sommet dynamique de l'ensemble, et où elle met un terme au parcours général en forme de crescendo de densité. Là encore, le discours fonctionne dans une logique de 'zapping', les progressions ne reposant pas sur un resserrement progressif du contrepoint, mais plutôt sur une juxtaposition frénétique de personnages musicaux contrastants. De ce fait, l'emprunt à l'univers abstrait de l'informatique revêt un sens musical, dans la mesure où la singularité du matériau sonore obtenu par la transcription incite, par nature, à conclure l'oeuvre.
