Cruel Mother for three voices (SSA), a traditional ballad arranged by Sarah Dacey . Duration: 4 minutes Composed: 2008 Also published as part of UYMP's Songspin Songbook, ISMN M 57036 603 3. This is a very old cautionary ballad that, like many folk tales, has no definite origin, there being many different versions from around Europe. I shifted the tonality of the melody from the Cecil Sharp arrangement to something slightly less cheery. First performed by Juice Vocal Ensemble in December 2008 at St. James Piccadilly, London.

The Cruel Mother for Voice, Flute, Clarinet, Violin and Cello. Composed 2014, published 2016. Score included in UYMP's Firewheel Anthology (ISMN M-57036-615-6), recorded by Dark Inventions. Duration: 6-7 minutes. The murderous tale of infanticide that is told in The Cruel Mother ballad is widely known in a number of forms. It has been performed and recorded by folk singers such as Martin Carthy, Maddy Prior, and Bella Hardy amongst many others, and inspired Down by the Greenwood Side by Harrison Birtwistle. The particular melody used in this arrangement was collected by H.E.D. Hammond in Dorset in 1907. The matter-of-fact representation of the terrible tale thatcharacterizes the tune is augmented by the quintuple metre and cheerful instrumental refrain. Commissioned by Dark Inventions and first performed by them on 8th May 2014 at The Engine House, Manchester.

A genre-defying collection of songs for female vocal trio, Songspin Songbook is a collaboration between Juice Vocal Ensemble and UYMP, funded by an Arts Council England grant. Described as “the 21st century’s answer to the Swingles or King’s Singers” (The Times), Juice have emerged as the face of a revitalised experimental scene for vocal music. Songspin Songbook publishes songs from their debut album, Songspin. The album was released on Nonclassical in 2011 to critical acclaim, winning an international Independent Music Award for Best Contemporary Classical Album in 2012. Featuring remixes by the likes of Camille producer MaJiker and Björkcollaborator Mikhail Karikis, the album was reviewed by The Observer as “eighteen immaculately achieved tracks, spanning Elisabeth Lutyens to Gabriel Prokofiev via folk song and avant garde, enchant and enthrall”. Songspin also featured the premiere recording of Elisabeth Lutyens' Of The Snow, which The Telegraph described of a performance by Juice as an amazing sustained piece of virtuosity. Songspin Songbook was edited by James Whittle and Paul Sild. Artwork designed by Christopher Leedham and Martin Scheuregger.

Four Traditional Songs is a setting of four heartbreaking and poignant folk songs by virtuoso contemporary composer Nico Muhly . Composed in 2011, the songs deal with themes of death, murder and unimaginable events that are emotively arranged for Countertenor Voice and Piano. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London, this work was first performed at those renowned venues in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Muhly states that he drew inspiration from old English folksongs, and would spend time imagining stylised yet subtle musical settings with accompaniments. The result of this intensive period of listening is Four Traditional Songs , whichlasts around 15 minutes and carries that incredible sense of sad balladry that counters the occasionally jaunty melodies. This edition is for Countertenor Voice. Please click here to purchase the Baritone version.

Steele's superb song-cycle Autumn Sequence was written for the pupils of Stockport Grammar School, and is scored for speaker, solo voices, chorus, flute or piccolo or recorder, tubular bells, handbells, organ pedal and piano, being the rather idiosyncratic resources then available at the school. It was first performed on October 3rd 1969 in the schools Hallam Hall, where the composer had been responsible for the specification of the recently installed organ. Douglas Steele himself played the piano part in his own inimitable style extending and improvising the cadenzas between the movements. A recording is available on Campion Cameo 2040/1 featuring Richard Baker narrating and choirs from Carlisle Cathedral, with John Turner on recorder.Autumn Sequence can be heard on the album Autumn Sequence: The Music of Douglas Steele and his circle.
