Ravel's ballet, Daphnis and Chloé, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered with the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1912. The ballet is now rarely performed, but its Suite No. 2 remains popular. It consists of three movements, Lever du jour, Pantomime and Danse générale, that are played without interruption. Tohru Takahashi makes no compromises in his transcription, which calls for at least 60 musicians and an optional mixed chorus!De Suite Nr. 2 uit Daphnis and Chloe bevat de muziek uit het derde deel van het ballet en bestaat uit de delen Lever du jour, Pantomime en Danse générale. Daphnis et Chloe is certainly not only one of Ravel's best works, but also one of French music's most beautiful creations, thus, Stravinsky's view of this ballet in his memoirs, published in 1935. Today the work is a monument to the art of Impressionist orchestration, incorporating the narration within the sound material. Each instrument is treated in the most effective way possible. Remarkable are the strings' extreme divisi, their harmonics' glissandi, and other enigmatic effects, such as utilizing a wordless chorus. Individual performances without choir likely go back to a makeshift arrangement that Ravel produced to facilitate performance at less prominent venues. But it is precisely the use of the choir that contributes to the magic of Ravel's music language.Retained for the new edition has been the original piano reduction by Ravel. The numerous changes in notes, harmony, and dynamics discovered in comparing the piano and orchestral versions are remarkable; the most important differences from the orchestral version are noted in the critical report of the conductor's score PB 5650.The Ravel specialist Jean-Francois Monnard has also edited this ballet with detailed attention to the customary Urtext standard. The preface includes numerous references to both genesis and performance history as well as interpretation, correcting also many previously handed-down errors. The large format of the piano reduction as well as the clarity and transparency of the modern notation aids in rehearsing the choir and ballet.

The heroic pastoral Daphnis et Egl was performed only once, on 29 October 1753, for the entertainment of King Louis XV at Fontainebleau and remained unpublished until today.This edition is based on Rameau's autograph manuscript, a copy of the separate parts, and the libretto published by Ballard in 1753. A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau, whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement. This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version—which is actually more complete in its musical form, in particular with its overture and two ariettas—but also reconstructs the original state of the final divertissement (presented in the appendix) before it was revised.

The ballet, a masterpiece of Impressionist orchestration, is now followed by new Urtext editions of the well-known Daphnis Suites, both edited by Ravel expert Jean-Francois Monnard. Ravel extracted two suites, two Fragements Symphoniques: the work now known as the First Suite was published before the first performance of the ballet. It served as a test for the composer, who wanted to present the just orchestrated pages in concert. Suite No. 1 was premiered in April 1911, but its reception was disastrous. It was not until three years later that Suite No. 2 was performed. It takes up the third and last part of the ballet unchanged. It is largely thanks to this suite, with its richness of color in the famous Lever du jour, that the work is known.The large format of the conducting score as well as the orchestral parts allow good readability and support the clarity and transparency of the modern notation. The already published piano reduction EB 9422 can also be used for the suites due to the double bar count and information about the layout of the suites.
