When guitarist John Olson and soprano Gioia De Cari commissioned me to write a piece for them, I envi- sioned writing something theatrical that might especially suit Gioia, who is both a singer and an actress. Eventually, I thought of Mark Twain. The great American writer and humorist of substance wrote a short, little-known book called The Diary of Adam and Eve, which is, of course, about the first days of human life on this earth, in Twainâs witty, but touching take on the Bible story. Adam and Eve each write diary entries. I chose several passages from Eveâs diary that convey the sense of constant wonder that she felt because absolutely everything in her world was new.Setting prose, rather than poetry, is a challenge for a composer because it has neither the innate rhythm nor the lyricism of poetry. On some intuitive level, this challenge led me to a process that allowed the music to evolve mostly from the guitar part. Whereas normally the vocal melody might emerge first, motivated by the text and with the accompaniment then added for support, here the guitar part was the prime mover. An example of this is the last song, which is a passacaglia played by the guitar, providing the ground over which the vocal line can soar.

My Spring Diary (Min Forårsdagbog) - Piano Pieces Vol. 2 by Karl Aage Rasmussen . Programme note In this, the second volume of My Spring Diary, which depicts the progress of the day from afternoon to night, the technical difficulties are generally greater than in vol. 1, and all the pieces are for piano solo. Freer use is made of the various types of notation which were introduced in the first volume. The 8 th piece (“Day’s End”) uses towards the end the type of notation called “open form”. The piece is a kind of musical resumé of the whole collection – elements of the earlier pieces reappear and at the end of the piecethe performer can exercise control over the way in which these elements are combined. The sequence of the individual groups is free, and it is not obligatory to play all of them. The only limitation is that the arrows within the individual groups must be followed and that the piece should end with the short passage marked “conclusion”.  .

1. Arrival Dream 2. Snow Squalls 3. It Happens 4. East Wind 5. A Clearer Memory The contrasting aspects of nature are a major theme in the work of Rhian Samuel, and in her song cycle Spring Diary for baritone and piano she responds passionately to its vernal magic. Beginning in dream and ending in memory, the five movements of the collection are a dramatic response to the turning season in Wales, conveyed through the fine detail of its characteristic weather and landscape as observed by the poet Anne Stevenson. Premiered at London's City University, Spring Diary is excellent material for graduate singers and pianists, who will draw inspiration from its vivid and assured word-setting and substantial and evocative keyboard part.

This work was commissioned by the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library for the dedication of the new Music Room and made possible in part through the funds from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and Meet the Composer-Arizona. Diary of a Journey was composed between July and September 1995 for the group Arpeggio. During the early summer of 1995, my wife and I took a vacation to Prague and Budapest. It was the first trip for both of us to these former Iron Curtain capitals. The train ride through the beautiful country-side, the dilapidated small villages and towns, the magnificent architecture and the feeling of grandeur in the two major cities left an indelible impression on me. I longed to write some kind of an essay about it. Diary of a Journey is the result of some of these thoughts, which were sketched (musically) as we visited each place. There are four 'snapshots' or movements which do not portray a specific scene, but rather try to capture the impressions I gathered from the people we observed and met, and the many awe-inspiring experiences we had. Throughout the journey, I felt that people were clinging to a tenacious hope for a better future, no matter how long it will take to realize it. In the first movement each player portrays a struggle against all odds, and with great energy and even wit tries to overcome the obstacles, ending on one serene high note as a resting point after all the conflict. The second 'snapshot' tries to capture the deep faith of a newly regained religiosity. It is chant-like, and uses as its basic melodic material a famous Czech hymn, penned by the great religious reformer John Huss. This movement is played very freely, without bar-lines and with the hymn shining through the fervent chanting. The third movement is a kind of 'demonic' scherzo. Fast and furious, the three instruments vie with one another in a true perpetual motion frenzy, which is at times relieved by short, more pastoral melodic fragments. A rather wild ending should leave everyone breathless. Finally, in the fourth 'snapshot' the instruments play a bit more as a team, meaning that is that there is more melody with accompaniment, and more imitative music giving the impression of a group effort. The energy is still at a high level but long lyrical lines abound, accompanied and interrupted at times by undulating fast notes still depicting the struggle against the blight which any visitor notices all around these countries, yet also showing the determination of the people to conquer adversity. --Samuel Adler.

Blooming JoyFlowers played an important role in the lives of people of the 19th century - picking them, binding them to wreaths, giving them as messages of friendship and love, using them to ornament a room or clothing, belonged to the forms of general sociability. It is within this context that Clara Schumann's flower diaries can be viewed: The first of the series was created in 1854, the year of Robert Schumann's admission to the Endenich mental institution, and was intended to share her inner and outer life with the initially personally unavailable invalid. In 1857, the meanwhile nearly 40-year-old Clara Schumann began her last flower diary, barely a year and a half after her husband's death. It reflects the travel stops of the pianist who was by now increasingly concertizing throughout central Europe and England, as well as her relationships with close friends, including especially the young Johannes Brahms who had presented her with the little volume expressly for her collections and annotations. The facsimiled diary pages of the exemplar preserved in the Staatsbibliothek Berlin are supplemented by biographical and botanical comments.

Bartók's Mikrokosmos has been one of the milestones in pedagogical piano repertoire for 80 years - and yet it is also far more than a classical piano primer. These 153 piano pieces, organized in ascending order of difficulty, engage not only with technical aspects of piano playing but also with the fundamentals of composition - from Imitation and Inversion, Ostinato, and Free Variations, concerning compositional technique, to mood pieces and pieces with programmatic ideas such as Notturno, Boating, From the Diary of a Fly, or the famous Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm. Mikrokosmos first appeared in 1940 in six volumes. Based on volume 40 of the Bartók CompleteEdition published in 2020(Z. 15040), the present Urtext edition offers the series gathered in three volumes. This edition includes Bartók's preface, exercises, and notes written for the first edition. Furthermore, it also features a preface and comments by the editor, which not only discuss the genesis and the compositional sources but also provide performers, teachers and pupils alike, with authentic and detailed information about Bartók's notation and the specific performing problems of Mikrokosmos.

Even though Janacek’s song drama „The Diary of One Who Disappeared†is scored for chamber ensemble, the composer’s operatic experience is clearly detectable. This work appears in the series “Complete Critical Works of Leos Janacek†(vol. B/6), edited by Jirà Zahrádka. The volume includes an expanded preface (compared with the performing edition, BA09575) and a separate edition of the song texts. The beautiful engraving matches that of the performing edition. During recent years the author of the poems has been identified as Josef Kalda, and we know that the muse of all of Janacek’s late works was Kamila Stösslová. “That’s why there is so much ardent feeling in this work†(letter of 24 July 1924) . “… With this work I constantly thought of you! You were this Žofka to me!“ (letter of 24 December 1927). The renowned editor’s research uncovered several new findings.
