An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube Waltz) has had more success as a concert waltz than in the original choral version: since its victorious performance at the World Exhibition in Paris (1867) it has achieved fame world-wide. InAustria An der schönen blauen Donau has even become an unofficial anthem. At the traditional New Year’s concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic, this waltz—along with Radetzky March by Johann Strauss the Elder—is always played as anencore.

This work for violin and piano by Martin Bresnick is a play on the words suite and bittersweet. Each of the four movements is based on a Yiddish folk song, which in English translate to On the Road, My Resting Place, Black Cat, and Dona, Dona. Each of the four pieces is primarily based on a Jewish folk song, but re-envisions them in a modern context, akin to Bartok and Kodaly. The composer noted, I found it a very challenging, yet touching way to remain in contact with some part of my own past that I don't usually reveal. The title references the difficult (bitter) and pleasant (sweet) aspects of experiencing the tumultuous history of a people through their folk music. This work for violin and piano by Martin Bresnick is a play on the words suite and bittersweet. This noble concert march was commissioned by the Musikverein Heek, Germany, for its 125th anniversary. In German mythology, Donar is the God of Thunder, and in the area around Heek, ‘Thunder Mountain’ is a household name. The work begins with a stately opening, followed by a beautiful trio melody with rhythmical and energetic sections. This is a march that features and showcases a range of musical aspects. It is perfect as an opener or to create variety during a concert. HIS IS THE FIRST CRITICAL EDITION OF THESE WORKS AND IT OFFERS WE HOPE A STANDARD READING WHICH EXAMINES, WITH SOLUTIONS, MANY UNEXPLAINED DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE COMPOSER'S MANUSCRIPTS, OUR EDITED MUSIC TEXT, AND PREVIOUS EDITIONS. 70 years after Ponce's death in 1948, we celebrate his life with a new critical-performing edition of his 24 Preludios newly prepared from the original manuscripts by Stefano Grondona. We proudly present a totally new edition with audio files of the 24 Preludios para guitarra. This is the first critical edition of the 24 Preludios para guitarra. The audio files of all 24 Preludios are played by Stefano Grondona and for download with a code printed in the book. This edition is really two editions in one. Not only is it a performing edition meticulously fingered by Stefano Grondona, but as well it is also an Urtext edition of the original manuscripts. Our pragmatic critical apparatus permits the player simply and clearly to see also what was in the original manuscripts, and what was not. With this publication it is now possible to clarify some long-standing issues relevant to our aim of presenting an accurate final music text; it is now possible to see where previous publications of this repertoire have varied with the manuscripts and how we have treated these situations in our edition, and how these were treated differently in previous editions. A comprehensive critical commentary is included together with copious historical and informative notes about the selection of the works and how and why our edition took its present form and content. At last we believe to have an edition which takes the form which the composer intended and new source material is also included, such as the Ramaugé ms for Prelude no. 6.

The timeless and year-round versatility of the Latin text Dona Nobis Pacem is set seamlessly with an English verse singing of understanding, kindness and hope for humankind. The flowing piano accompaniment lies beneath the 2-part and 3-part mixed voicings designing a simple, yet musically rich choral for young and developing voices.

Dona nobis pacem and Lux aeterna were both written for concert programs devoted to specific themes. They share the use of the techniques of minimalism in their organ parts, enabling the broad vocal lines in the choral voices to stretch out above this instrument, thus imparting a special aspect to the concerns addressed by the texts: the longing for freedom in the here and now, as expressed in the Dona nobis pacem, as well as the desire for peace and tranquillity in the Lux aeterna. Dona Nobis Pacem was written for the memorial service for my wife of 54 years, Phyllis Louise Jergenson. It utilizes only the words: Dona Nobis Pacem with Requiescat in Pace at the end of the piece. The instrumentation, listed below, is for Chamber Orchestra, SATB Soli and SATB Chorus. It is my personal expression of grief and loss at the enormous void in my life after Phyllis passed on. It goes through the tolling in the brass at the opening to strife and turmoil in the middle to the exquisite Harp and Soprano solo for a peaceful conclusion.
