Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.Dit levendige werk vol dynamische uitersten is opgedragen aan de North American Brass Band Association. Qua vorm is het geent op de ouverturestijl, hoewel de thema's op zichzelf staan en het een programmatische compositie betreft. The conductor Frieder Bernius regards the motets of Hans Fahrmann as an indispensable and extremely welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire. The composer's output is little known nowadays. Born in 1860, he was considered the Richard Strauss of the organ during his lifetime. With their demanding harmonies, Fahrmann's choral motets place high demands on choirs and - like Reger's works - stretch tonality to its extremes. And not least, their sonorous expressivity is thanks to their chromatic richness. Frieder Bernius has recorded the Motets opp. 34, 45, and 65 with the SWR Vokalensemble for the first time on CD (Carus 83.499).

Although it belongs to Bach's homage cantatas, the text deals only indirectly with praise for a new chamberlain. Rather, the eloquent characters portray situations from rural life, which are also reflected in the music: Bach often drew on well-known dance movements and folk tunes. Because of this the cantata as a whole seems less 'academic' than his (surviving) sacred vocal music. Just two arias were composed in the typical da capo structure in which the musicians' abilities are put to the test. But because of the shortness of the other movements, the cantata is extremely varied. Picander's humorous text makes the cantata extremely versatile, far beyond its original purpose. Shortly after the Second World War, a combative movement of Danish, Belgian and Dutch artists chose the cobra snake - extremely dangerous yet considered sacred - as a symbol of their resistance to strict guideliness of form. The name Cobra also happens to contain the first letters of the cities Copenhagen, Brussels ans Amsterdam, from where most of the movement's members came. The Cobra movement, which existed from November 1948 until November 1951, can with some justicication be called the last major avant-garde movement of the 20th century.The source of inspiration for the composition Cobra comes from four paintings: Obhobning by the Dane Egill Jacobsen; La jeune fille et lamort by the Belgian Pierre Alechinsky; Orgeldraaier and Le rythme joyeux de la ville by the Dutch artists Karel Appel and Corneille. Obhobning means pile-up, which is represented musically in the first part by a melodic and harmonic pilling up of perfect fourth's. The first part is also characterized by a rhythmic feeling, which the painting gives through its use of numerous black stripes. In the painting La jeune fille et la mort, Pierre Alechinsky places a young girl opposite Death. The second part features the constantly pulsating motion of live while a creeping, dark, melodic line develops. The tension between life and death is tangible as a battle reveals itself. In part three, one hears the Orgeldraaier by Karel Appel, as cheerful and playful as an organ grinder's music. The painting Le rythme joyeux de la ville by Corneille is busy and extremely dynamic, a perfect source of inspiration for a powerful, rhythmic ending to this composition.

Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.Dit levendige werk vol dynamische uitersten is opgedragen aan de North American Brass Band Association. The most straightforward and shortest of any of my string quartets to date, the sixth employs only two thematic gestures which are used, perhaps obsessively, throughout: (a) brief melodic lines formed principally of sevenths, and (b) an ascending scale. The formal design is born out of the continual combining, interweaving and juxtaposition of these two elements, which collect themselves into two movements played without pause: the first predominantly slow and pensive, the second rhythmic and driving. Quartet No. 6 is approximately 16 minutes in duration. The score was commissioned by the Los Angeles-based Calder Quartet, four extremely talented young musicians with whom I performed at the Aspen, Colorado, Music Festival, and is dedicated to my wife, Elizabeth on the occasion of our fifty years together. The first movement is written in memory of my father-in-law Howard Deischer (1907 - 2005), who died during the course of composing.
