In the Odyssey, dreams come into the world through one of two gates. If they come through the gates of ivory they are false dreams. However, if they come into the world through the gates of horn they are true dreams that tell the user of things to be, or illuminate truth. The Gates of Horn is a dramatic piece for band that alternates a syncopated fanfare with a bold, yet lyrical theme. These contrasting ideas chase each other throughout the piece.

Text by the composerTranslation: engl. (E. J. Dent), ital. (V. Levi), port. (G. de Medeiros)Place and time: Bergamo, around the 18th century.Characters: Ser Matteo del Sarto, master tailor (baritone) - Abbate Cospicuo (baritone) - Dottore Bombasto (bass) - Leandro, Cavaliere (tenor) - Arlecchino (speaking part) - Colombina, Arlecchino's wife (mezzo-soprano) - Annunziata, Matteo's wife - Zwei Sbirren - Ein Karrner - a Donkey - People at the windows (silent parts)The idea behind this work was to combine a major speaking role with a part for a female singer and orchestra in the spirit of the opera buffa. The overall tone is pacifistic and anti-bourgeois. Busoni's inspiration was that of an opera-play in the style of Italian improvised comedy; he wanted types and characters on stage whose varying typology would provide the source of conflict ... The title hero absconds with the young wife of the Dante-reading tailor Matteo. He returns as a false barbarian commander, as a husband who engages in a duel with the suitor Count Leandro, and as a conqueror who announces the moral of the story in the epilogue: how to be able to bow in rags and still retain one's dignity and rights. The piece takes a turn for the absurd when the Abbate, at the sight of Leandro, who is presumed dead, begins to sing a chorale-like song of praise to the donkey of Providence who comes trotting in at that moment. This introduces the most musically refined number in the piece, the quartet, in which Leandro's love aria and his duet with Columbina satirize the attitudes prevalent in Italian opera from Scarlatti to Verdi. Musically, Busoni uses throughout the entire work an idiom of dance-like, blissfully transparent comedy and hides harmonic audacities behind touches of lightness. The orchestral sound radiates an incomparable brightness and buoyant elegance. (Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt, 1967)In the appendix, EB 9433 contains the later composed aria Wer siegt? Wer fallt?..

Perpetuum Mobile, meaning perpetual motioni, is a Latin term that describes an impossible situation in which a substance has infinite energy. This situation is impossible because it violates the first and second laws of Newton. But it is possible in music. Imagine a musical piece that is a continuous stream of notes. These are exactly the etudes in this album. They do not stop, they are always in motion and they can be played continuously. Etudes are solo pieces, purposed to help the musician practice his technique. In this album, each etude is designed to practice another technique. In addition, the etudes in this album are arranged according to the circle of fifths - each etude ends in a key which is dominant to the beginning of the next etude, even the last etude to the first one, and so on and so forth. This further emphasizes the infinite mobility of the music in this piece. Once you enter the loop, you can't get out of it. All the etudes start in a minor key, as a symbol of the sadness of the matter, and end in a major key, to represent the hope, a false hope, that perhaps the next etude will take you out of the loop. This album is a three-year-long project, in which I gathered ideas from the environment in which I live, from the people in it and from their thoughts, from life that continues all the time, and the music that will never stop. Maayan Tal, 17, is a young Israeli musician, pianist and composer.

Commissioned by the Camerata vocale Limburg, this piece uses a sacred text from 'Ecclesiastes' in the version of the Zurich Bible of 1931. The text is made up of four different parts and set to music with different musical means. The first movement Wind has been composed for two three-part male-voice choirs. The music closely follows the natural declamation of the text, often in the form of a canon between the two choirs and the different voices. The second movement Licht is written for four parts. The light is presented in a slow tempo (poco rubato), often in high falsetto registers. Except for a forte outburst when darkness comes, the sound is very soft and gentle. The third movement is called Jugend and shall be performed by a young, enthusiastic and carefree tenor soloist. The text is based on many dactyls which gives the rhythm a youthful freshness. The fourth movement Alter tells how age progresses until the end. This is presented musically by a six-part canon which begins deep and soft and eventually culminates in high registers and a fortissimo. The work fades in a hardly audible pianissimo with the words of the preacher 'How everything is null and void! Everything is in vain!' (Robert Sund). Duration: 10 minutes.
