Not hard, but very impressive, this David Shaffer original is perfect concert or contest material for mid-level bands. It starts with a stately fanfare introduction which leads directly into the furious section. This section features a fast tempo where several playable yet independent melody lines are intertwined to create a very busy yet pleasing musical landscape. An adagio section follows before a reprise of the furious section leads to a big finish. A rewarding work that is a welcome addition to any performance!

A lively, dynamic city such as Yokohama deserves to be captured in this energetic and colourful music-as was the composers intention in writing this piece! This celebratory opening fanfare is the introduction to the Yokohama Festival Overture, a work that Jan Van der Roost wrote on commission from the Festival Committee of the Yokohama Art Festival. At the request of the committee he composed a fresh, dynamic opening fanfare—for the entire brass section of the band and percussion (ad lib.)—playable independent of the overall work - the Yokohama Festival Fanfare.

This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfareleads to a magnificent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener. Eccellente come opener!

On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However, this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness, innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody, fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound, intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns, this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy, innocent and carefree themes, too. There follows a festive, martial theme, a tribute to the village, before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.

This musical fantasy depicts the history of the Dutch fortified town of Elburg. The work begins with an atmospheric medieval picture of the Convent of St Agnes, the nunnery that was built in the first half of the 15th century. We hear the sound of the convent bells together with an upward motif, which will reappear later in the work. Next, the rest of Elburg is featured, including the fortress - from which the bells of the Sint-Nicolaaskerk (Saint Nicholas Church) are ringing. Then, cheerful sounds can be heard at the Vischpoort (Fish Gate), where a dancing group is performing a 16th century French folk dance (a branle des chevaux). We also hear old wagons rumbling over the town’scobble stones. Trade made this Hanseatic town a lively place. The repetitive upward motif first heard in the introduction now develops into a more distinct feature, reflecting the mercantile spirit of the town residents. Then follows the slow middle movement, in which the clock has been turned back to the time when Elburg was still lying on the Zuiderzee (which was a bay of the North Sea), and was struggling with floods. After the second St. Marcellus Flood (1362) and the water flood of 1367 it was decided that the town would be relocated. We now hear the theme of branle des chevaux in a minor key, followed by a death bell sounding in remembrance of the drowned citizens of the former town. Back in our own time, a slow, expressive theme in Baroque style mirrors Elburg’s tranquil places, such as the Feithenhof (Feithen Court) and the Weduwenhofje (Widow Court). Then the bustle returns with motifs from the introduction, followed by an attractive theme in which present-day Elburg is portrayed with its many tourists. Now, suddenly, there is an echo from the past, depicting the dramatic floods and wars that once plagued the town. This leads to the grand closing theme: branle des chevaux is heard for a final time from the perspective of the historic town centre.

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics. The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations. Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding. We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.

This heroic march strives to capture the spirit in which young musicians make music. The stately and joyous introduction underlies this factor. Following the introduction a triumphal second theme tells us in music how this was accomplished. Through practise the band has reached its musical goal. Let your band take you on its triumphant tour.
