Written for the 40th annual Autumn Music festival in Izegem (Belgium). All the participating orchestras performed this special celebration march as the grand finale to the festival.

This work was composed as ceremonial music, as part of a march medley for the participants’ entry for the 71st National Sports Festival and the 16th National Disabled Personnel Sports Festival, held in Iwate Prefecture in 2016. The European premiere of this piece took place in December of that year, the composer guest conducting the Young Musicians from Fribourg, Switzerland. This work, fusing Japanese folk song with march music, will have wide appeal, like the sister work March-Bou-Shu, also published by de Haske Publications.

Dit werk is gecomponeerd als ceremoniële muziek: het maakte deel uit van een marsenmedley voor de binnenkomst van deelnemers aan het 71e Nationale Sportfestival en het 16e Nationale Sportfestival voor Gehandicapten, gehouden in de prefectuur Iwate, in 2016. Deze combinatie van Japanse volksmuziek met marsmuziek zal veel muzikanten en luisteraars aanspreken, net als het zusterwerk March-Bou-Shu, dat ook door de Haske Publications bv werd uitgegeven.

Dieses Werk wurde 2016 anlässlich eines großen Sportfestes in Japan komponiert und war Teil eines Marsch-Medleys für den Einmarsch der Teilnehmer. Die europäische Premiere fand 2016 mit den Young Musicians aus Fribourg (Schweiz) und dem Komponisten als Gastdirigent statt. Im March-Chagu-Chagu vermischen sich japanische Volksmusik und Marschmusik zu einem exotischen Hörvergnügen.

Cette oeuvre fut composée comme musique cérémonielle, faisant partie d’un medley de marches l’arrivée des participants du 71e National Sports Festival et du 16e National Disabled Personnel Sports Festival en 2016. La première européenne s’est tenue en décembre de la même année l’initiative de l’Association Fribourgeoise des Jeunes Musiciens en Suisse. Cette œuvre qui fusionne une chanson folklorique japonaise avec la musique de marche aura une large résonance, comme sa composition soeur March-Bou-Shu, aussi publiée par De Haske Publications.

Questo brano è stato composto nello stile di una musica cerimoniale, come parte di un medley di marce per accompagnare l’entrata dei partecipanti al 71° National Sports Festival e al 16° National Disabled Personnel Sports Festival nella Prefettura di Iwate in Giappone nel 2016. La prima europea della composizione si è tenuta nel dicembre dello stesso anno a Friburgo (Svizzera), sotto la direzione del compositore stesso. Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic.
Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  .

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.

Jacob de Haan haalde zijn inspiratie voor dit driedelige werk bij het Hessische kuuroord Bad Orb en het tweejaarlijkse Blaasmuziekfestival van de Europese Jeugd, waarvan hij meerdere keren beschermheer was. In het werk verwerkte de componist verschillende e_x001D_ecten die betrekking hebben op het festival. Zo hoort men in de vallei verschillende orkesten door elkaar spelen, een indrukwekkend e_x001D_ect dat ook in de compositie werd verwerkt. Ook kan men ervoor kiezen om tijdens het werk het orkest op te splitsen en het podium te laten verlaten en marcherend weer richting podium te stappen. Een spectaculair en vernieuwend werk!

Die Inspiration für dieses dreiteilige Werk geht auf das Internationale Blasmusikfest der Jugend Europas zurück, dessen Schirmherr schon mehrfach Jacob de Haan war. Es beginnt in festlich marschierendem Tempo, gefolgt von sakraler Musik, abseits der Bühne spielenden Instrumentengruppen und einem kleinen Marsch für Blechbläser und Flöten. Der dritte Satz ist eine Parade, bei der sich das geteilte Orchester aus verschiedenen Richtungen auf die Bühne zu bewegt. Auch ohne die effektvolle Positionierung der Musiker ist Call of the Valley ein eindrucksvolles Blasorchesterwerk.

Call of the Valley s’ouvre sur un tempo festif en forme de marche. Des sonorités majestueuses dessinent un concert de musique sacrée. Puis deux groupes instrumentaux quittent la scène et exécutent leurs parties distance. Un groupe de saxophones interprète une valse, un autre groupe réunissant cuivres et _x001D_fl tes joue une marche. la fin de l’oeuvre, l’orchestre reprend les thèmes des deux groupes tandis que ceux-ci reviennent vers la scène. Une fois arrivés, ils restent face au public alors que résonne l’accord _x001C_final.

Un festival di musica per _x001E_ati per banda giovanile che si tiene a Hesse in Germania, e al quale Jacob de Haan ha più volte partecipato in veste di giurato, è servito da ispirazione per comporre questo brano. L’inizio vede un tempo festivo che simboleggia l’arrivo delle bande. Sonorit maestose disegnano un concerto di musica sacra, seguite da suoni che evocano le interpretazioni di varie orchestre. Un gruppo di sax interpreta un piccolo valzer, un altro gruppo che unisce ottoni, _x001D_auti e ottavino suona una piccola marcia. Nel _x001E_finale dell’opera, l’orchestra riprende i temi dei due gruppi.
