This is music at the Grade 1 jazz level that correlates with specific units in the Jazz Basics improvisation method, as well as with Jamey Aebersold's Volume 1: Jazz: How to Plan and Improvise. It is performance music that works with flexible instrumentation requiring as few as four horns and piano, bass and drums. Each piece includes a CD with the full performance as well as solo practice tracks. All the rhythm section parts are fully notated and include chord symbols. This swing chart correlates with Jazz Basics, Unit 5 and with Jamey Aebersold's great play-along Volume 1: Jazz: How to Play and Improvise. It incorporates the same FMI - Ebmi - Dmi chord sequence that is the basis for much of Jamey's first volume.

Burungkaka is an Indonesian folk song which is known throughout Malaysia. It is about an old parrot which sits near the window, singing. The children make fun of it in a good-natured manner. Originally arranged in 1997 for virtuoso jazz trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and the WDR Big Band by Bill Dobbins. Albert had recorded the piece many years earlier on a trio recording of his. Saxes double on flute, clarinet, or bass clarinet. First alto doubles on soprano. Substitute saxophone parts are provided on the reverse side of the woodwind parts.
