The teachers under whom Ãrpád Balázs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift Ãrpád Balázs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Négy kép (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given thetitle Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Induló (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Játék (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Known for his works for choir and also wind ensemble, Arpad Balazs (b.1937) composed Four Pictures combining both singing and playing. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indulo (March), while the expansive second movement is entitled Cantilena. The third movement is the lively, but still lyrical Arietta, and the work concludes with Jatek (Play) which features a mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other. A unique and rewarding work for young players. Dur: 3:30 (Grade 2).

Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 's Four Madrigals From The Natural World for 6-12 part mixed chorus. This piece incorporates texts by Les Murray. ' FOUR MADRIGALS to texts by the Australian poet Les Murray are composed of two songs (Bats' Ultrasound and The Octave of Elephants) written for the Australian vocal group THE SONG COMPANY, and two songs (Cattle Egret and Comete) from my larger work SOUND / SIGHT, written for the Danish Radio Chamber Choir, but here arranged for six voices. The texts are pictures and situations from - or meditations over - THE NATURAL WORLD. Les Murray's way of approaching this world is not in the least sentimentalor nostalgic: the poems reveal a truebeing-out-there realism: so basically the approach is realistic, but the creating of form elevates the material to an abstractplay, a daring and exuberant poetic language. These poems asked to be set to music. I gave up old idiosyncrasies regarding descriptive music, and surrendered to the madrigal, with its special so-called madrigalisms, which entails also animal-imitations. You will hear this particulary inThe Octave of Elephants. ' - Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen.

In the summer of 1852, Vier Stücke ['Four Pieces'] for viola and piano by Robert Schumann were published under the title Märchenbilder ['Fairy-Tale Pictures'] by the Kassel publishing house Luckhardt, with a particularly expressive vignette on the titlepage. Unusual were both this title Märchenbilder, on the one hand, and the scoring with a solo viola, on the other. With the viola in a soloistic role in chamber music, Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, offers a rather unfamiliar, but all the more delightful sound.
