Fetes galantes was actually planned as a hybrid opera-ballet to a libretto by Debussy's friend Louis Laloy. For this, Laloy arranged selected poetry by Paul Verlaine into three tableaux, replacing an earlier (unstarted) Debussyan project with Charles Morice entitled Crimen amoris. During his last productive summer of 1915, Debussy set a sequence from the start of the first tableau, 'Les Masques', involving stanzas 1 and 3 of the opening song for Mezzetin in Verlaine's comedy Les Uns et les autres. The action is set in a park a la Watteau late one summer afternoon as Mezzetin attempts to entertain a group of nonchalant masqueraders with only the aid of his voice and a mandolin.This appears to have been prefaced by a slower, elegiac introduction reminiscent of the opening of the comtemporary Cello Sonata and it leads to a danced minuet by the masqued dancers which has clear echoes of the piano piece L'Isle Joyeuse (1904). Following Laloy's scenario, the mas-queraders then sing extracts from Verlaine's 'A la promenade' (from Fetes galantes itself). The minuet returns at greater length before being cut short by a chilly gust of wind, after which the park returns to its orginal state (and music) as though nothing had really happened.

The main body of the new edition of Les Indes galantes, published in Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR IV.2, 7), restores the version authorised by Rameau in 1736. This basic editorial decision has made it possible to present a fully coherent and authenticated reading of the work (after the adjustments from the earliest performances). All other versions before and after 1736 are gathered together in 19 complements.Sylvie Bouissou's new edition differs markedly from previous modern editions and all existing recordings. With its complements she does justice to the performer's need for Rameau's various revisions while finally making accessible a version actually authorised by Rameau. The new scholarly-critical edition of the score of Rameau’s “ballet hroïque†Les Indes galantes finally clears up its convoluted source history. At the first performance, on 23 August 1735, it consisted of a prologue and three acts: Le Turc gnreux, Les Incas du Prou and Les Fleurs. But Les Fleurs already proved controversial in the early performances, and from 11 September of that same year it was given a wholly new form. For the revival on 10 March 1736 Rameau and Fuzelier added an entirely new act Les Sauvages, and in the years that followed, the “ballet hroïque†was presented either complete (1743, 1751 and 1761) or abridged with a prologue, Les Incas du Prou and Les Sauvages (1751–73).With regard to the instrumental movements (dances and descriptive pieces), the present publication is based on the complete edition Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR) volumes IV/2 and IV/7 edited by Sylvie Bouissou which are currently in preparation. It includes not only the orchestral pieces in the version deemed valid by Rameau in 1736 (with version 2 of Les Fleurs and Les Sauvages), but also those from the first version of Les Fleurs (1735) as well as its 1743 and 1773 revisions. Performers are thus given a complete selection of all the orchestral numbers from one of Rameau’s central stage works for use also in concert performance.

The main theme, which is broad and lyrical, is stated by horns and winds. As the piece develops, the theme is played by full, chordal brass accompanied by rhythmic woodwind lines. The B section is lightly orchestrated with a solo oboe accompanied by the clarinet section, slowly growing to a tutti statement. The piece recapitulates with bold brass chords.
