Hans Christian Lumbye was born in Denmark in 1810 and has become known for his many light-hearted and airy works, most commonly waltzes, galops, polkas, mazurkas and marches. The Champagne Galop is without doubt one of the most performed works of this master from the North. De Deen Hans Christian Lumbye was een grote bewonderaar van de Weense orkestmuziek van Strauss en tijdgenoten. Ook Lumbye werd beroemd in dit genre en verwierf er zelfs zijn bijnaam ‘Strauss van het noorden’ mee. Lumbye is beroemdgeworden met zijn onbezorgde en lichte walsen, galops, polkas, mazurka’s en marsen. En 1839, il assiste au concert d’un orchestre viennois qui interprète des oeuvres de Johann Strauss et Joseph Lanner. Le jeune homme, fasciné par ce qu’il entend, décide de perpétuer le style et la tradition des maîtres viennois. Quelques mois plus tard, on le surnommera même le Strauss nordique“. Champagner- Galopp est sans aucun doute l’oeuvre la plus interprétée de ce compositeur danois.Il danese Hans Christian Lumbye, grande ammiratore della musica orchestrale viennese di Strauss e dei suoi contemporanei, divenne un compositore di successo di questo genere, guadagnandosi l’appellativo di “Strauss del Nordâ€. La Gioconda, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito, is the most successful theatrical work by Amilcare Ponchielli (1844-1886). In this work there are two dance pieces: the Furlana at the conclusion of the 1st act and the Danza delle ore in the 3rd act. The Dance of the Hours has a precise choreographic outline: it is a masked ball which includes the “hours†of dawn, day, evening and night successively, and ends with a wild finale of galop. The latter is a sort of fast polka, in binary rhythm and unbridled pace. A French variant of it is the can-can. The finale in galop time of the Dance of the Hours recalls certain playful dances by the composer Jacques Offenbach, such as the famous Can-can that concludes the overture of the operetta Orphée au enfers. Galop arranged by Franco Cesarini is perfect for an encore!
