The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. Score available separately - see item CA.4067800.

The Mass with Christmas hymns, Missa carminum is available from Carus in a orchestra version and in a version for choir and organ. The unique feature of this work is that each movement of the Ordinary employs a well-known Christmas hymn as an instrumental cantus firmus. In the score the text of each hymn has been included in the appropriate passage, so that the Christmas signature tune may be performed vocally, for example, by a one-part children's choir.

Johann Gottlieb Naumann, who today is becoming increasingly well known, achieved recognition during his lifetime as a composer of operas, among them the first Swedish national opera, Gustaf Wasa. In addition he wrote a large number of sacred compositions for the Court of Dresden, where he was employed for many years, including the present Missa in D minor, which was still performed well into the 20th century. This work, probably composed for Christmas in 1794, displays a decidedly pastoral character in the Gloria and Agnus Dei and moreover, is distinguished by charming solo woodwind parts.
