The Ash-tree reaches all the way into the sky and has three roots, each growing into three different places. One root grows into the Land of Hel (Hel is the goddess of Hell), called Helheim, another into theLand of Frost-Giants, called Jotunheim, and one root grows into the Land of men, called Asgard. And the Ash-tree reaches into the sky. In the crown of the tree lives a squirrel, which moves fast around the tree and spreads gossip, both between the three roots and between three roots and the crown of the tree.The Edda is a large collection of Old Norse poems, collected in the 12th Century by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson. With its height of 4,808 meters, Mont-Blanc is called “the roof of Europe.†The highest mountains on our planet have been insurmountable for a long time. Only in the past 250 years have those giants been mounted. Crystal-hunter Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, a doctor, were the first to climb Mont-Blanc, in 1786. Many paths lead to Mont-Blanc's peak: the regular ascent goes through the magnificent “voie royale of Saint-Gervais-les- Bains,†which was opened in August 1855 by the Englishmen Hudson, Kennedy, and Smythe. Today's most common route to climb up, starting from Saint-Gervais via Aiguille du Gou ter (3,863m), Do me du Gou ter (4,304m), and Are te des Bosses (4,547m), was first used in 1861. Otto M. Schwarz composed this work inspired by “the roof of Europe†with its luminous and huge glaciers. Early in the morning, mountain climbers set off to the peak; they witness the sunrise, and experience the hazards that the journey up to the summit brings along. A snowstorm and falling rocks at Are te des Bosses aggravate their journey. A sudden change of weather, however, enables them to reach the top after a strenuous ascent. This piece invites you to an imaginary journey from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains via the “voie royale†to the top of Mont-Blanc.

In 2005 it was 400 years ago that the first volume of the world-famous novel ‘El ingenioso hidalgo don Quichote de La Mancha’, written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), was published. Don Quichote, a nobleman who is under the delusion that he must fight against injustice starts out on a journey with his steed Rosinante and his peasant squire Sancho Panza and experiences all kinds of remarkable adventures. In the course of them his love for the lady Dulcinea of Tobosco plays an important role. One of the most famous scenes is that of his fight against windmills on the plain of La Mancha, which he takes to be enormous, evil giants. ‘DonQuichote’ consists of four short pieces: 1. Don Quichote: the ingenious Spanish nobleman. 2. Dulcinea: the lady with whom this errant knight has an imaginary courtly love affair. 3. Sancho Panza: Don Quichote’s loyal and sensible servant who, compared to his master, is a simple soul. 4. Rosinante: the steed that has much to put up with considering it has a rider who often spends more time on the ground than in the saddle.
