In Olli Koskelin's 7 Haiku for flute and guitar the haiku gets three different interpretations: intertwined with the composed version the performers improvise it and read it out loud. The texts of haiku are included in English and in Finnish.Duration: c. 15'This product is a B4 sized folder with two copies of the performance score (loose pages).Olli Koskelin's (born 16 April 1955) compositional output reflects a wide range of interests. The vast area covered by his style encompasses the neo-impressionism of the piano work Courbures (1989) to the post-expressionist echoes of his Music for String Quartet (1981) as well as the breakneck virtuosity of his clarinet piece Exalte (1985/1991) and the rich romantic textures of his orchestral piece ... like a planet silently breathing... (1993). He often uses the overtone series like the French spectral composers and avoids dramatic culmination. Soft harmonics, tranquil arching melodies, a leisurely rhythmical pulse and a coherence of mood are in evidence in his later works as in Uurre (1997) for chamber ensemble, Miniatures (1997) for string quartet and Circles within for 19 solo strings.

A diptych by poet Mary Jo Salter, the text of Fred Hersch's Two Haiku compares the fleeting span of a life to the turning of the seasons. In addition to painting the words of these brief stanzas with rich chromatic harmonies, Hersch's six-minute score calls upon the singers to illustrate the themes of the haiku with the sounds of whistled birdsong and unvoiced breaths.
Dedicated to the memory of musician and educator Steve Zegree, this eight-part choral setting was commissioned for vocal octet Roomful of Teeth by Ryan McNaughton and premiered at the 2017 Ecstatic Music Festival.

Two haiku (the first for piano alone---the only piece here to have been published before---the latter by Basho) bookend three love songs dedicated to Harvey's wife, Rosa. The grouping of the pieces into an eight-minute cycle was the composer's own idea, and it mixes Eastern and Western poets in a totally characteristic manner. Both Tagore and e. e. cummings are represented, poets who are featured in some of Harvey's finest works (Song Offerings and Forms of Emptiness, respectively), and a third song sets Tennyson's Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal.

The Irish composer Frank Corcoran already won several first prizes, such as for his English-language choral composition 'Eight Haikus' at the International Foundation for Choral Music in 2013. The almost 10-minute work for 4- to 8-part mixed a-cappella choir is based on eight secular texts written by Corcoran himself in the style of the famous Japanese haiku poems. In this shortest lyrical form of world literature which consists of only three lines, the composer born in 1944 uses a large variety of labials, sibilants and plosives and addresses socially relevant topics by means of simple descriptions of nature and seasons in a content-wise and musically figurative and almost mystical language.

A VOICE PASSES provides musical commentary on three haiku by the 19th-century poet Masaoka Shiki and one by the legendary master he most admired, Yosa Buson. Stricken with tuberculosis and addicted to morphine in the later years of his short life, Shiki wrote a large number of haiku that dealt with the pain and suffering caused by his illness. Of these, many were at the same time infused with humor and optimism. The haiku selected by the composer as the programmatic bases of the individual movements are laid out in a “four-seasons” sequence and progress from the despair and resignation of summer to the hopefulness and vibrancy of spring - a not-so-subtle metaphor for the progression of the recent pandemic. In addition to the textual inspiration, each movement is structured around a well-known composition that echoes the spirit and content of the haiku.

Football (resp. soccer) has been fascinating for many contemporary composers - maybe because of the unpredictable dramaturgy within a match, the complexity of different combinations, contrasts or complements between different strategies, the soloist-like position of extraordinary players - in short, there are numerous connections to musical ideas.Zeitlupen (Slow-motion replays) reflects football on different layers. The cycle consists of three interlocking parts: four poems from Gottfried Blumenstein's 11 Haikus vom Fussballfeld form the musical core, to which three pantomime-actions with piano accompaniment, showing characteristic situations, are added. (This idea is based on a kind of a slow-motion-soccer, using a balloon instead of a football, that I used to play with my brother in our room, when the weather not allowed to go outside for a match on the playground nearby. The similarity towards far-eastern meditational techniques of these pantomimes also forms a connection to the haiku form of the poems.) The piece is completed by two recitations recalling famous teams and the best and (maybe) worst from german football history: the world champions from 1954 and the team of the unbearable put-up game against Austria during the world championship of 1982. This part also refers to a well-known poem by Peter Handke, Die Aufstellung des 1. FC Nurnberg vom 27. 1. 1968.Behind that, playing with numbers has been important for the structure. The form of the haiku (5-7-5 syllables), a symmetric all-interval-series and many other elements are taken from the number of 12 (eleven players and their coach). Gesture and sound-colours of the piano part are economical but precise; towards the ending percussive sounds dominate it. Directly illustrative moments - like the rhythm of cheers call in Nr. IV - are rather exceptional. The altogether form follows the labyrinthical structure of Pierre Boulez' Le marteau sans maitre, written around the famous year of 1954...Benjamin Schweitzer.

This Night Of No Moon for Ensemble was composed by Bent Sorensen in 1998-99. Programme Note: The title THIS NIGHT OF NO MOON is taken from the haiku poem by the female Japanese writer Ono No Komachi (834-880), about the emptiness without one's beloved - the night without a moon - the night without hope. In this piece songs and melodies are hidden - songs and melodies for this title and for other Haiku poems by the same poet. The piece is in four movements and is commissioned Michio Nakajima Mirrk Art Forum for BIT-20. (Bent Sorensen).
