The melody of this Christmas carol comes originally from a Finnish songbook of 1582, containing a collection of 74 medieval songs together with Latin texts. The version arranged by Gustav Holst became very popular in the British Isles - with a text that links it to December 28, the Day of the Holy Innocents. Philip Sparke based his adaptation on Holst’s powerful arrangement and has added various musical material himself.

The 14th-century carol, Personent hodie, is both mysterious and powerful. On This Day Earth Shall Ring---a festive processional on the ancient melody arranged by Scott Watson---explores both aspects. Beginning quietly, the modal tune emerges over a chant drone with rustic, medieval percussion. Before long, the piece takes on the joyous character alluded to in the tune's most familiar English text setting, On This Day Earth Shall Ring (written by composer, Jane Joseph, a student of Gustav Holst). As the work draws to an ebullient close, all the stops are pulled with resounding brass and ringing metallic percussion! Whether used as a striking concert opener or a jubilant final selection, On This Day Earth Shall Ring will add festive élan to your winter/holiday program! For SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied This is an arrangement of the well-known tune from Piae Cantiones known as the carol 'Personent hodie'. To this Carter has fitted entirely new words full of Easter joy, and arranged the vocal lines to be easy, effective, and stately. It is majestic and works particularly well as a processional.
