Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Impromptu-Caprice remains a popular performance piece in the advanced harpists' repertoire. Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. Pierné composed for a variety of instruments, Impromptu-Caprice being one of four solo works by the composer. This Pierné piece for harp contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as significant tempo changes, flourishes of semiquavers and many alterations in dynamics. Impromptu-Caprice is a varied piece essential to the repertoire of aspiring harpists.

In her Impromptu, Helena Winkelman conjures an atmosphere of timelessness, employing musical elements variously meditative and percussive, punctuated by shadowy accents in the contrabass register and delicate flourishes in the soprano. This masterful composition, engrossing and adventurous, is a rewarding challenge for the performer. Performing notes Attentive pedaling is key to producing the spectral resonances in this Impromptu. The impressionistic atmosphere of the piece requires a carefully gauged use of all three pedals, even where not expressly noted in the score. Especially with the right pedal many small ad lib. changes are necessary to create this impressionistic atmosphere. The central pedal only holds the bass notes. Care must be taken that the pedals are not changed at the same time to avoid the third pedal affecting notes that should not be. The composer wrote Impromptu with Schubert’s Hungarian Melody (D817) playing in her mind’s ear, and suggests that her Impromptu be programmed to follow it attacca in performance.

Impromptu for Trombone and Piano was written, as the title suggests, rather spontaneously. Classical improvisation has always been a favorite technique of mine; I very much enjoy simply sitting down at the piano and composing freely through improvisation, sometimes for up to forty-five minutes or more without a pause. These sessions for me are both personal and musical, but in a seemingly incompatible way, and with different affects. As a personal endeavor, I have always found improvisation to be essentially a meditative exercise for me; after a substantial bout of spontaneous music-making, playing the final note feels like emerging from a blurry and dream-like state. I've always enjoyed the markedly improved clarity and focus that I am granted in all my non-musical activities immediately following such an event. However in hindsight of my musical mind, these long sessions of improvisation have always been extremely unsatisfying...I'm not really able to retain any of the musical information which I created. The music that I made, with some choice moments of dictation-worthy value, is not only through-composed but essentially un-replicable. It has, of course, been suggested to me that I record these moments so that I might transcribe them later, however as with most creative things in this world, a true impromptu work requires complete spontaneity; I simply can't improvise anything of real value on my own command. This is the reasons that I feel lucky to have wrote this piece. I suppose it was luck of the draw to have a brief stint of enough patience to combine composition with short bursts of improvisation. As both a trombonist and a pianist, I am thankful to have the luxury of improvisational facility on both instruments. The result is that the work is truly a duet, in that both the trombone and piano parts contain original motives. It is not the case that the piano part serves to accompany a melody in the trombone, because some music which you hear from the piano came as improvisational ideas before a trombone part was superimposed on top of it. And, of course, the opposite is true as well. Essentially, Impromptu was written like a jigsaw puzzle made of oddly shaped pieces; two jagged and asymmetrical chunks become balanced only when they find each other. I hope you enjoy pulling the pieces apart as much as I enjoyed putting them together.

The earliest surviving version of the popular Valse-Impromptu was written by Liszt into the diary of Tsaritsa Aleksandra Feodorovna on his visit to St Petersburg in 1842. This version appeared in print the following year as Petit valse favorite. On his next visit to Russia, in 1843, Liszt wrote a musically and technically more demanding version for Countess Marie Kalergis, a pupil of Chopin, but this was never published in the composer's lifetime. A final version, similar in shaping to the second, appeared in 1853 with the title Valse-Impromptu. The present edition contains the score of all three versions as published in the New Liszt Edition, with the critical notes to them andprefaces in English and German covering all the main issues of the work's origin and interpretation.

About William Walton Edition
In March 2014 Oxford University Press published the last volume in its magnificent William Walton Edition, the only complete critical edition of a 20th-century British composer's oeuvre. All 24 volumes are handsomely printed and bound. Walton's entire output is now available to scholars and performers in a definitive and fully practical edition, based on the form in which the composer ultimately wished his music to be performed. The general editor, David Lloyd-Jones - the eminent conductor, English music specialist, and founder of Opera North - invited a world-class expert to edit each volume. Carefully researched introductory essays place the works in their historical context and in the composer's oeuvre, and there are full critical notes.
