Darkness Fades Away is written as an accessible song for young voices that speaks to our hopes for a kinder and more empathetic world. The melody utilizes a subtle meter change from 2 /4 to 3/4 in order to emphasize the second beat and allow it space to grow into the next note. When the optional counter-melody is introduced, the rhythm relies on an off-beat pattern, but be sure not to accent those notes. Both melody and counter-melody are meant to flow gently with a little movement throughout. Note the repeated use of a 7th (low sol to fa) to introduce the main motif. The ending section grows to its climax (m. 80-82) with optional notes for higher voices that feel comfortable in that range. After the voices echo and repeat the main theme, the rallentando and subsequent caesura (m. 104-106) allow for some freedom in direction until the piano reinforces the original tempo before itself fading away.Darkness Fades Away is written as an accessible song for young voices that speaks to our hopes for a kinder and more empathetic world. Maelstrom: Descent Into Darkness is an intense and powerful work featuring brisk melodic themes underpinned by propulsive low brass/low woodwind and percussion lines. Very musical mixed meters, and special woodwind and percussion effects heighten the intensity of this work. The lyrical themes of the ethereal middle section provide a resonant contrast to the propulsive nature of the rest of the music. Perfect for contest or concert, this dynamic work will showcase the musical capability and finesse of your entire band.

In the beginning was the Word. The Word. Holy, Sacred. Just. Eternal. God in Christ. Christ in God. In the beginning. And suddenly the Word was Flesh. Incarnate. Human. Breakable. Common. Morning light into darkness. And that life-light blazed out of the darkness and the darkness could not put it out. Redeemer, Savior. Messiah, Lord!. His name--Jesus. This is the story of the birth of the Prince of Peace.

Under the Sun's Gaze as a title for a musical composition conjures up many possibilities. It is, in fact, an imagined line from an unwritten poem, invented with the idea of capturing something of the visual aura the sounds and energy of this work invoke in its composer' mind. An omnipotent presence in all of nature, a source of life yet also capable of its destruction, the sun affects the light and dark in our physical existence as it defines the daily and seasonal life. The music of this work, in three interlocking parts, takes turns being exuberant, caressing, scorching, receding, hazy, lazy, blazing, dissolving into darkness, blinding in its intensity. Subtitled Concerto da Camera III, this work is written for what has become known as the standard Pierrot instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano plus percussion. The difference here is that the winds are doubled - the two flutists alternating with piccolo and alto flute and both clarinetists also doubling on bass clarinets. The ninth member of the ensemble, a soprano saxophone, appears well into the piece, its lyrical, plaintively expressive quality dominating the musical terrain for a while. While occasionally joining the others for some tutti outbursts, it maintains its position as something of a guest throughout. Of the various thematic ideas that populate this work, a six-note descending line played by the clarinet appearing right at the work's opening then arching back up reveals itself, as the music unfolds, to be the principal melodic building block of Under the Sun's Gaze. Its various transformations include the plaintive soprano saxophone melody appearing in the middle section. Just under 20 minutes in length, the work in its totality can be heard as being in a loose arch form, its ending receding into a distant darkening horizon which carries in it the seed of the new dawn that lies beyond. Under the Sun's Gaze was commissioned by the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress for the San Francisco Contemporary Players, David Milnes, conductor.

As part of a collaboration between students and composer, Sean O'Loughlin, Dark Dreams is a dark and mysterious piece that utilizes techniques such as tremolo and pizzicato. Following a slow and mysterious opening which illustrates the tapestry of sound for the composition, the work develops the musical material into various vivid, intense, and gripping musical moments.
Dark Dreams was commissioned by the Westport, Connecticut Public Schools for the Bedford Middle School 7th Grade Orchestra, Michele Anderson, director. It is a piece influenced by many ideas from the students including such descriptive words as dark, mysterious, vivid, intense and gripping. The collaboration process on commissions like this are very rewarding for both the students and composer.
The students were looking to include techniques like tremolo and pizzicato, so the opening includes both of these to set the tapestry of sound for the composition. The slow and mysterious opening gives way to an intense fast section at m. 19. Trading off between upper and lower strings adds to the tension before the upper strings take hold of the melody at m. 31. This melody is derived from the slow opening material. The lower strings get their chance on the melody at m. 47 in an augmented form. This builds to a dramatic slow section at m. 57. The opening material returns at m. 66 to transition back to the fast material. Make sure to play the silence at m. 88 for maximum effect and really lean into the final note even though it is on beat 3 of the measure.

Musicians onstage stand in the limelight and enjoy their fame whereas after performance they become shrouded in a strange fog of isolation. Light is associated with ascent and descent: it can lead into brightness, but equally into darkness. Light can illuminate and yet bedazzling; fog stands for insecurity, uncertainty and anxiety ... but also for mysticism and wafting dreams. Somehow time stands still...

This work was commissioned by the Latvian choir Kamer within the framework of a large-scale project centered round the topic the sun. A poem by Paul de Brancion is interspersed with expressions and sayings taken from French folklore. The poetic text describing the contemporary anxiety that everything will be scorched by the sun as a result of global warming provides a response to popular opinion and cheerful idioms. The score is constructed like a descent into great depths, from the sunlight into darkness. The composition can also be combined with its sequel composition Au dessous des etoiles (Under the Stars) for mixed choir.Thierry Pecou.

This cycle of carols, to the poetry of Christina Rossetti, was assembled piecemeal over a number of years, gradually acquiring a larger dramatic and harmonic arch shape as new settings were added. I was particularly attracted to Rossetti's conflation of the dark, fallow winter landscape with that of the soul waiting for salvation. The cycle traces the long nights of watchfulness before Christmas, with the great event constantly deferred, only glimpsed periodically in different visions before the music turns inward again to contemplation. The opening carol embodies this spirit, with passages of diffuse, roving harmony interspersed with meditative, lyrical pedals, calling out the night watch and dreaming of a far-off summer of the spirit. Earth Grown Old is a kind of double carol, setting two complete poems, their lines at first presented separately as a still, expectant chorale and a jubilant dance, then progressively interwoven toward a fervent climax before once again receding into quiet. In the bleak mid-winter, which sets a highly compressed version of Rossetti's original poem, presents an enfeebled landscape frozen in time, in dire need of deliverance. A gentle melody weaves its way through static drones, broken by an angels' chorus announcing the joy to come. Love Came Down at Christmas ends the waiting, with its gently falling, overlapping lines building to a final revelation, the mystery of Christmas at last made real.
