November 1854 in Washington geboren. Obgleich er ein vielseitiger Komponist war und fünfzehn Operetten, Suiten, Humoresken, programmatische Konzertmusik, Tänze usw. schuf und keinesfalls für das Blasorchester alleine arbeitete, ist er in überwiegendem Maße nur als Marschkomponist ein Begriff. Sousa gehörte zu den Menschen, die ohne Unterbrechung arbeiten und es erstaunt daher nicht, dass er nach einer Konzertprobe am 6. März 1932 in Reading, im Staat Pennsylvania. verstarb. Die Idee, die hinter dieser Sammlung von Sousas bekanntestenMärschen steckt, ist, heutige Blasorchester mit einer praktischen Ausgabe, ganz im Sinne von Sousas eigener Aufführungspraxis und Instrumentierung, auszustatten. Der englische Komponist Philip Sparke zeichnet für diese Neuinstrumentierung verantwortlich. Als quelle dienten ihm Kopien von Sousas Originalpartituren und historische Aufnahmen. Die Partitur enthält viele nützliche Informationen. Philip Sparke gibt in seinem Vorwort wertvolle Hinweise zu Besetzung und Aufführungspraxis. Des Weiteren ist eine ausführliche Biographie von John Philip Sousa und zu jedem Marsch eine Werkbeschreibung enthalten. Letztere wurden in fachkundiger Weise von Werner Probst verfasst.
