Frank J. Oteri (NewMusicBox) reviews the recent Bridge recording Paul Lansky: Imaginary Islands, writing in depth of the composer's reputation for electronic music. The three works included on the album are, however, written expressly for carbon-based life forms, according to Lansky, and represent a dramatic departure. They are his very first compositions for orchestra, despite sounding like they were written by someone who has had a lifetime of experience taming this behemoth ensemble! While the title Imaginary Islands may evoke a specific mental imagery, Oteri reminds us, Most people associate the word island with isolation and tranquility, but it’s important to remember that Manhattan, Montreal, Hong Kong, and Singapore are also all islands. While Lansky’s second island offers opportunities for reflective contemplation, his first and especially his third are sprawling urban soundscapes that offer many reasons for numerous return trips. Duration: 21'.

On average, about eight thousand (mostly light) earthquakes occur worldwide each day. Composer Jan de Haan has always been fascinated by this natural phenomenon. Earthquake portrays the beautiful South-American peninsula, Isla Iberi which lies directly on a major fault line. The peace and tranquility is shattered by a major tremor and the terrified people flee in fear. In addition to showing the earthquakes destructive power, Earthquake also conveys the courage and faith of the industrious people of Isla Iberia, as they energetically start the reconstruction of their beloved residential area. Earthquake is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the devastating Asiantsunami which occurred on 26 December 2004.

Often called the Ellis Island of the West, Angel Island in San Francisco was used as an immigration station in the first half of the 20th century, processing some one million Asian immigrants. Because of U.S. policy of the time, many spent years on Angel Island awaiting entry. Recently named a National Historical Landmark, Angel Island and its history is the inspiration behind Chen Yi's Angel Island Passages, commissioned by the San Francisco Girls Chorus. Chen explores the experiences of the immigrants, even using poems carved in the walls, to express the mood, the patient yearning, and the ultimate release and embrace of a new country. Angel Island Passages was premiered June 4-5, 2010 by the SFGC and the Cypress String Quartet at the San Francisco Conservatory. For advanced performers. Duration: 15'.Commissioned by San Francisco Girls Chorus (Executive Director Melanie Smith), and premiered by the SFGC and Cypress String Quartet on June 4, 2010, conducted by SFGC’s Artistic Director Susan McMane, at San Francisco Conservatory, CA, the 3-movement song cycle Angel Island Passages is written for children’s chorus and string quartet, with multimedia projection on the walls of the concert hall, produced by visual artist Felicia Lowe. The creative idea of this work was initiated by Dr. McMane, who invited me to write the music, and sent me the book “Island, poetry and history of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940â€, by Him Mark Lai, Genny Lim, and Judy Yung for reference in 2009; also inspired by the Angel Island stories, and through cooperation with Felicia, who shared with me her film “Carved in Silence†and video productions “Chinatown†and “Road to Restorationâ€.I named the first movement of my work as “1882â€, which reflected the dark mood under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The collective poems carved on the wooden walls in Angel Island expressed deep emotion in sorrow and anxiety. The music in the second movement “Longing†is sad and sentimental. The third movement is called “We Are Americaâ€, which is ever-moving, energetic and optimistic. The text sung in the beginning in Chinese means “I am an Americanâ€. It’s sung in Cantonese dialect, then in Mandarin. As the music develops, from homophonic to polyphonic with increasing layers, the climax is reached when the text is turned to English “We Are Americaâ€, which symbolizes the flourishing society with the great contribution from thousands of immigrants during the years. The music fades out towards the ending of the work, which pushes the scene to a remote picture, to look forward to the future peace of the world.I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with such inspiring creative artists in this project, and hope the work is meaningful to our new society after the premiere performance.—Chen Yi.

The Legend of Spirit Island was commissioned by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, Duluth, Minnesota (Mark Whitlock, conductor), to honour the euphonium player, Dick Carlson. The piece takes its title from a local legend about Spirit Island, which lies in a gap of the St. Louis River called Spirit Lake. The legend tells the story of Chaska, the son of a Dakota Chief, and Wetona, the daughter of Ojibwe Chief Buckado. He was handsome and she was beautiful; it wasn’t long before they fell in love. This is a challenging euphonium solo in which the versatile soloist can explore very expressive melodic sequences, as well as energetic, technical sections. In the seventeenth century Tortuga Island was a hotbed of piracy lasting for about thirty years. In this composition Tortuga Island has a mysterious quality that is reminiscent of the pirate days of the island. Your students should enjoy this piece that is suitable for both concerts and contests.Be careful of the pizzicato introduction. As directors know, that is an open door for rushing. The tempo is flexible, but try not to go faster than quarter note equals 120. It is suggested that the piano part be used for rehearsal only. The piece is rather straightforward, but it would help to accent the tied eighth notes in the syncopations. As usual, pay attention to dynamic contrasts throughout the piece.

1. My Beautiful Island (in the present) - The character is that of a young woman who sings joyfully and exuberantly of the beauty of her island - a magnificent paradise. 2. Oh Home of Sweet Tranquility (20 years later) - The woman is beginning to realize that her cherished island is beginning to disappear due to the encroaching waves, storms and ever increasing heat. The bloom of her idealism and youth has been replaced with something more dreadful. 3. The Song Itself We Have Forgotten (an additional 20 years later) - The island clearly is doomed due to rising seas resulting in the evacuation of the entire island. She is experiencing a slow simmering shock, is dis-regulated, mumbling, and thoroughly disbelieving in what is taking place. Out in the distance I imagined an ocean liner on the horizon. She’s standing on a long line to be transported to the ship that will take her to an unknown destination and destiny. 4. Aubade - (a love poem welcoming or lamenting the arrival of dawn) As expressed by a seagull riding the wind above the ocean, my take of it relates to the arc of universal existence - Beginning, Middle (life expressed), End. Performance Note: Island Elegy and Aubade may be performed by 3 sopranos - one for each song- or by one soprano. In the latter case the final Aubade may be performed via a previously recorded multitrack rendering of all three parts or two parts with the soprano singing the top part. Alternatively, the pianist can accompany the soprano, (who sings the top line) by playing the bottom two parts on a melodica, piano or electric keyboard. Soprano(s) & Piano (with opt. Melodica) Duration: ca. 25' Composed: 2023 Published by: Subito Music Publishing.

Cape Horn is situated at the southern point of South America, on the Chilean island “Isla Hornosâ€. For centuries, sailing around thehorn was said to be one of he most dangerous passages for ships that wanted to sail from the Atlantic Ocean westwards to the PacificOcean. Tradition has it that Sir Francis Drake discovered Cape Horn in 1578 and the Dutch voyager Willem Cornelisz Schouten was the first to round it in 1616. It was the latter who named the promontory after his Dutch hometown Hoorn. It is estimated that over 800 ships and 10,000 men in total sank into the icy waters during attempts to circumnavigate the cape. The work Cape Horn – a solo for Horn and concert band – attempts to reflect the beauty, but also the peril of this region. It is a matter of great importance to thecomposer Otto M. Schwarz to write new repertoire in the wind band solo works genre. The tonal language of his main genre – film music – is as unmistakable as the experimental parts and catchy tunes.
